Word document properties not updating
Hello, I have a document library with a custom column called "DocRef". This library contains word documents in which I have added, via the QuickPart menu, the "DocRef" property. When I edit the "DocRef" column on Sharepoint, the document property is updated and the other way round. My problem is when I upload a document from this library to another one which also have the same "DocRef" column: On uploading, Sharepoint retrieve the value of the document property for the "DocRef" column but when I edit the value in sharepoint, the document property is not updated. Same thing if I try to edit the document property, the "DocRef" column is not updated. Is this scenario supposed to work or is the doc property / list column sync only work within the same library? Thanks for any help.

Hi, Is your custom column a site column and are you using the site column in both libraries? Is the site column deployed through using a content type andapplying the content type to the document library? If your using a site column and the site column has been deployed through a content type then when the document is uploaded to a new library the metadata properties should be promomoted to SharePoint. If you answered yes to the above questions then Are you using Office 2003? -IvanIvan Sanders My LinkedIn Profile, My Blog, @iasanders.

Hi, Yes, my custom column is a site column deployed through a content type. This content type is applied in the 2 document libraries. I am using Office 2007 SP2 with Sharepoint 2007 SP2 64bit. More precisely, the document information panel is in sync with the sharepoint values but the fields inserted inside the document are not updating.

Hi MOSS117, Could you tell us the detailed steps about how did you create the site column through content type? Please explain the following steps more clearly: when I upload a document from this library to another one which also have the same "DocRef" column Did you break the inheritance of content type? Try to create a new document library, then apply the content type to it, then check the effect. For more information about Content Type Settings and Site Columns, please refer to the following article: Content Type Settings and Site Columns http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms477863(office.12).aspx Hope this helps.Regards, Rock Wang Microsoft Online Community Support

Hi, I tried again with a new content type, site column and libraries. I ended with the same issue. Here are the detailed steps about how I have done it: 1. Create site column: On the root web of the site collection -> Site Action -> site settings -> modify all site settings -> Site columns -> create site column with the following values: - Name: "TestColumn" - Type: Single line of text 2. Create Content Type: On the root web of the site collection -> Site Action -> site settings -> modify all site settings -> Site Content Types -> create content type with following values: - name: "TestContentType" - parent content type: document - add column TestColumn 3. Create Document Libraries: On the test web site ->site actions -> create -> document library with the following settings: - Name: "TestList1" - Document Template: Microsoft Office Word Document - allow management of content types - Add content type TestContentType - set default content type to TestContentType Same process for a second library called "TestList2" 4. Create document on TestList1: On TestList1 -> new -> TestContentType Fill document properties: - Title: "TitleValue" - TestColumn: "TestColumnValue" Insert properties in document: - Insert -> Quick Parts -> document Properties -> Title - Insert -> Quick Parts -> document Properties -> TestColumn Save document in TestList1"as "TestDocument1.docx" 5. Edit TestDocument1.docx: - Open TestDocument1.docx - change TestColumn value to "TestColumnValueModified" - change Title value to "TitleValueModified" - Save document ==> The property TestColumn inserted in the document via QuickParts is updated to "TestColumnValueModified" ==> The property Title inserted in the document via QuickParts is updated to "TitleValueModified" 6. Download TestDocument1.docx to desktop and modify document: - TestDocument1.docx -> Send To -> Download a copy -> save to desktop as "TestDocument2.docx" - Open document - set TestColumn value to "TestColumnValueModified2" - set Title value to "TitleValueModified2" - save document ==> The property TestColumn inserted in the document via QuickParts is updated to "TestColumnValueModified2" ==> The property Title inserted in the document via QuickParts is updated to "TitleValueModified2" 7. Upload TestDocument2.docx to TestList2: - Upload TestDocument2.docx in "TestList2" - the upload form is displayed with the correct values for TestColumn ("TestColumnValueModified2") - the upload form is displayed with the correct values for Title ("TitleValueModified2") ==> The properties are retrievd by sharepoint. 8. Edit TestDocument2.docx: - Open TestDocument2.docx - change TestColumn value to "TestColumnValueModified3" - change Title value to "TitleValueModified3" - Save document ==> The columns in sharepoint are updated with the correct values (Title="TitleValueModified3" and TestColumn="TestColumnValueModified3") ==> The property Title inserted in the document via QuickParts IS updated to "TitleValueModified3" ==> The property TestColumn inserted in the document via QuickParts is NOT updated . It still have the value "TestColumnValueModified2"

Hi, I am unable to reproduce this issue. I went a few steps further and updated the properties via edit properties from the ECB Block or Context Menu and all changes are populated when opening the document, whether I send to Location of second library or download and save to the second library or any combination of approaches. If you would like to setup a livemeeting let me know I would like to see this issue reproduced... Tested on SharerPoint version 12.0.0.6524 with Office 2007 SP2 & Office 2010 -IvanIvan Sanders My LinkedIn Profile, My Blog, @iasanders.
