Word Cross References do not work in checked out document
Hi I have a user who is editing a training manual, and has added cross references. These work fine if the document is opened (not checked out) from SP, or saved as a local copy and opened. If you try to follow the link (ctrl + click) IE8 opens and tries to reopen the Word document with "#_Ref..." at the end (the ref refers to the bookmark in the document). This always fails with "navigation failed" shown on the page in IE8. Is there anyway to remind Word these links are internal cross references, and there's no need to reopen the document from SP? We are using Word 2007. I've tried disabling cached content in IE8, hyperlink security warnings and the SP site is a trusted site in IE. Many thanks in advance Ben Shepherd

Hi Ben, Check out option is generally used when one user is editing the document and at the same time other user comes to edit, it gives a pop up saying that this document is locked for editing by XXXX user. So if you want to edit the document you have to either check out it or as you mentioned save it as a local copy, edit it and re upload it. By checking out the document we are locking out the document for edit at a time. hope this will help you out.Warm Regards, Pratik Vyas | SharePoint Consultant | http://sharepointpratik.blogspot.com/ | Posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights

This answer does not address the questioner's issue. The question was how to prevent the cross references reopening the document from Sharepoint--not how to edit it.
