WoL - How to work Subnet-Directed Broadcast
Hi all. I have a question. I have configured the transmission method Subnet Directed Brodcast for WoL, but I want to kwon if this method send only one wake-up package containing all the MAC of the destination subnet or sends a packet to wake up for each mac address. thks for any help.

Subnet directed broadcast (wol), sends one packet per subnet.http://www.enhansoft.com/

just to clarify the answer, I have 100 pcs in a subnet so with this configuration the SCCM just send one package containing the 100 MACs of these pcs. is it true? Thks ...

No, it will send one packet to the broadcast IP address for that subnet. This should wake up all PCs on that subnet.http://www.enhansoft.com/

Hi, It uses a wake-up package containing the MAC address and the IP subnet address of the system collected by the hardware inventory. This package is broadcasted over the last known subnet of the system. More information here: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb632807.aspxFollow me through my blog and Twitter!

Each "magic" packet only contains a single MAC address and will thus only wake up a system with that MAC Address. Each NIC that receives this packet compares the MAC address in the packet to its own and only wakes up the system if they match -- this is a function of the NIC and not the CPU or OS. The terms subnet-directed and unicast have to do with how the network delivers the packet and have nothing to do with the packet itself. Unicast means that ConfigMgr sends the packet to a specific IP address using the normal routing mechanisms of the network. Subnet-directed means ConfigMgr broadcasts a single packet on a specific subnet. This is actually handled by the network infrastructure though and must be enabled on your layer-3 devices.Jason | http://myitforum.com/cs2/blogs/jsandys | http://blogs.catapultsystems.com/jsandys/default.aspx | Twitter @JasonSandys

Hi Jason. Thks for you answer. So If my SCCM is configured with subnet-directed and I have the remote subnet that has 100 pcs then the SCCM server send 100 packages. ( one package for each pc ). thks.

If they are all targeted for an advertisement where WoL is specified, then yes.Jason | http://myitforum.com/cs2/blogs/jsandys | http://blogs.catapultsystems.com/jsandys/default.aspx | Twitter @JasonSandys
