This past week we have been having excessive traffic on our machines that are locked by SS (and WDP). Analysis of network sniffed capture files indicate that about half the traffic is coming from an IP range owned my Microsoft. The data is either machine code or encrypted as we can not decipher what, exactly, the traffic is. SS is configured to do updates on Sunday evening after we close. This Monday, after the Sunday update, the traffic mysteriously stopped. The traffic had started suddenly last Sunday (unsure whether it was before or after the updating). My suspicion is that the traffic might have been either Windows Updates that were corrupted during the update, or a large quantity of Windows Updates that were pushed out after the Sunday SS update and the machines were trying to download/install and, of course, getting reset after every reboot. When the master image was originally created and Windows was laid down on the master machine, I believe I left the normal Windows updates (that would be done normally if SS was not installed) at the default setting. My question is, given that regular Windows Updates were left at the default, does SS's update inhibit the regular Windows Updates from trying to occur, or does the regular Windows Updates still try to happen in spite of the fact that they will be wiped out at the next reboot? In other words, should regular Windows Updates be turned off for SS installations? Thank you. Pat Clifford

Hi Pat, to answer your question, if you turn on WDP, Schedule Software Updates should turn on automatically. After that, your setting in SSU takes control of Windows Update and it only automates critical updates from Microsoft. It does not automatically install recommended updates, optional updates, driver updates, or special updates that may have their own license agreements.
