Windows XP Setup hang on Dell 755
I am trying to deploy XP SP2 to a Dell 755. Everything works fine until I get to the Windows XP Setup. The machine locks up completely. If I cycle the power on the machine it starts up, finishes setup and then works normally. I have the presetup driver for my disk in the sequence and it appears to work fine. The only thing that isn't working is the Audio drivers from KB888111. But I can deal with them after the OS is in place. Or is this driver what is causing my issue? Can anyone tell me where XP may be keeping a log that might help me track it down. I've searched for one but not found it, and finding one with a Internet Search hits too many other things.

Are you sure this isn't a hardware error of some sort? Do you have another 755 that you can test with to rule out the possibility of there being a hardware issue? Many different hardware issues could cause this sort of behavior, including a bad disk drive, dying memory, or even a bad power supply.I have successfully deployed Windows XP to a Dell Optiplex 755.Trevor SullivanSystems EngineerOfficeMax Corporation

The only driver I wasn't able to load was the KB888111 XP SP2 driver. I loaded that driver and took another image, then used that image to deploy and the image load worked. So I don't think its hardware. What I was hoping to find was the log that could give me a clue as to where the problem was. Hopefully its not the KB888111 drivers. Unless someone knows a trick to get those drivers to install in a Task Sequence before XP Setup kicks off.

Bob,We are including KB888111 in our base image, and it successfully deploys on a Dell Optiplex 755, so I would venture to say that compatibility with this particular system model is probably not your issue. If you want to review plug-and-play device detection, enumeration, and installation, you can review the file %WINDIR%\setupapi.log in Windows XP (if it won't boot, use a WinPE disc to access the drive offline).Hope this helps,Trevor SullivanSystems EngineerOfficeMax Corporation

Thanks Trevor, I was just hoping not to have to go through adding it to the image. Oh well, the image is done and I suppose I don't have to worry about it until the next one of these comes along. Thanks for the pointer to the log file.

Just got DELL OptiPlex 755 (with STMicro TPM chip). It comes with Vista Ultimate. When we tried to install XP SP2 from boot, just when windows starts, after loading setup drivers, we end up with BSOD crash with stop code 0x0000007B. Naturally, this stop code points to some issues with IDE controllers. I looked into the BIOS and seen that we have a SATA hard disk. Fine. Next step is to look at which controller it is using. In this case by default it is set to AHCI (Advanced Host Controller Interface). I had my suspicions on this and changed this to use ATA and tried to install XP SP2. Voila! It worked!
