Windows XP SP3 - Network printing stopped
I have a customer with 4 networked Win XP Pro SP3 PCs each running SteadyState V2.5. There is a printer attached to a DLink Print Server. All PCs were printing OK up to a couple of weeks ago when 1 of the PCs stopped printing. I have logged in to this PC, turned off Disk Protection and tried deleting and reinstalling the printer. The printer works OK if connected directly to the PC via USB but not when connected via the print server. I can connect to the print server via the network and get the printer to print a test page initiated by the print server. I have also uninstalled and reinstalled the LPR printing service but still have not been able to get the network printing working. If I share the printer on another SteadyState PC I can print via that as the Admin on the problem PC but not as the restricted user. Is there something else I could try? The only other thing I can think of is to reinstall XP and set up the PC again from scratch, which I am reluctant to do.John Taylor

Hi John, please try to uninstall Windows SteadyState completely for test: 1. Restart your computer and start pressing the F8 key on your keyboard. On a computer that is configured for booting to multiple Operating Systems, you can press the F8 key when you see the boot menu. 2. When the Windows Advanced Options menu appears, select Safe Mode, and then press Enter. 3. Log onto Windows by using the Administrator account or any user account with the Administrator privileges. 4. Delete the Cache.wdp file under drive C. If the cache file cannot be found, let’s show hidden files with the following steps. ----------------------- 1. Open drive C: Click Organize menu-> Folders and search option. 2. Click the View tab. Under Hidden files and folders, click "Show hidden files and folders." 3. To display other hidden files, clear the "Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)" check box. 4. Click the "Hide extensions for known file types". 5. Click OK. After that, delete related registry keys and files ----------------------- 1. Click Start and then Run. 2. Type in regedit and then click OK. 3. Navigate and delete the following two branches(you can back up these registries before delete ): HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Computer Toolkit HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\Windows SteadyState 4. Search and delete all Windows SteadyState related entries. 5. Delete files under C:\Program Files\Windows SteadyState If network print works, install Windows SteadyState again and do not set any restriction for user first to see if the network print work. If network print still not works, it is a possible that the issue relate with the configuration of your print. Thanks for the help. I went onsite to do as you suggested, but first had one more try to get it working. After turning off the disk protection I managed to install the printer using the driver already installed for printing via another PC in the workgroup. This worked with the admin and member user even after turning windows protection back on and rebooting several times. I will retain your suggestion for future use just in case the problem reoccurs.
