Windows SharePoint Compatible Application could not be found
I'm trying to open simple txt and jpgs from a document library by choosing the item in the library and selecting Edit Document. When I select that option, an error appears stating that the documet could not be opened for editing and thata Windows compatible application could not be found. I've done a ton of searches and it seems that most people are having this issue with Office applications. I'm not. If I perform this same operation with HTML, Word, Excel, etc. files, it works fine and opens properly. However, other file types like images and text documents show this error. I guess my question specifically relates to whether there is some sort of XML file that I can modify to set default editors for certain file types? My guess is that folks uploading PDF files will want Acrobat to open as well. Any help would be appreciated.

The issue is that your are trying to open the document from SP. This works with Office documents. But with non Office documents you'd need to download a copy of the document to your local and then upload the modified version. I was afraid of that. I had heard of some people forcing PDF documents to open within Acrobat when selected directly from the Document Library and was wondering if there was a way to accomplish this same task using other document types. Of course downloading a copy, making the changes, and then re-uploading makes plenty of sense, hence the idea behind versioning. Thanks for the response!

I have the same issue. But it doesn't work only at one user, at all other users it works well. Download copy and upload the modifiy should be done from SP automatish. It works for office file, but why it doesn't work for txt at one user?

I kown the reason now. One user at us uses the office 2007, he can not edit .txt file in SP. He gets the error message in IE browser. In firefox browser "edit" even doen't display in dropdown menu. Other users use the office 2010, which include feature supporting none office file editing perhaps. My question is which feature or plugin is needed for editing none office file (e.g. .txt, .jpg ...) in sharepoint. I want to install it for user with office 2007.

I know this is an old thread but for anyone reading this, that response above is not correct. Yes you can open txt files in NotePad through SharePoint. You must have your Microsoft Office SharePoint Support Services installed and of course your desktop must also have NotePad as the official application (association) to open txt files too. Then you should see in the Chevron drop down arrow an "Edit Document" option.Linda Chapman | SharePoint Consultant | My Blog: http://LindaChapman.BlogSpot.com | http://www.linkedin.com/in/LindaChapman

On your desktop go to Control Panel, and go to Add/Remove Programs, then go to your Office installation, hopefully it is Office 2007 or higher, then click on it to CHANGE, then as it goes through the modules when you get to the page that has all the features listed, toward the very bottom should be something about Tools, expand that, and you will finda something similar to SharePoint compatible support services, or Microsoft Office SharePoint Support Services, and click that to run from your computer always. Sorry I don't have it in front of me to know exactly, but that is the gest of it. If you aren't sure which one just change your Office install to run everything from computer always (NOT at first use). Then you will need to reboot.Linda Chapman | SharePoint Consultant | My Blog: http://LindaChapman.BlogSpot.com | http://www.linkedin.com/in/LindaChapman
