Windows 8 Mail App - Can't add IMAP account

Hi all, I have been playing with Win8 for a few weeks now and love it. My only concern is that I can't use the Mail App to connect to my hosted email accounts via IMAP, every time I add the settings it tells me:

We still can't find settings for xxx@yyy.com.au. Providing this additional info may help. If you don't know this information, search online or check with your provider.

I have exactly the same settings in Outlook on the same PC in desktop mode and it works fine, as well as connecting from all of my mobile devices. I can't even find where to look for additional info on the error.

  • I've also tried uninstalling and reinstalling the Mail App.
  • I've tried manually adding the server settings to no avail.
  • I've confirmed my account supports IMAP and proven it is working in Outlook.

Any thoughts please?

I find it weird that there wouldn't be a solution to this. Who would the application allow IMAP as a connection protocol then not allow connections using it?

Do the Metro apps log errors anywhere that can be looked at for additional information on the error?

this can happen if the cert for your mail provider doesn't match the server name, etc. or if no cert is present. it would be helpful to have some details.       On Mon, 19 Nov 2012 20:25:12 +0000, J Windebank wrote:   > > >Hi all, I have been playing with Win8 for a few weeks now and love it. set up gmail accounts to use EAS. see http://digitalmediaphile.com/index.php/2012/11/17/get-google-contacts-and-calendars-in-windows-8-apps/   the above has the instructions to set this up in the Mail App   On Mon, 19 Nov 2012 21:12:27 +0000, Vegan Fanatic [MVP] wrote:   > > >I have seen problems using Live Essentials as well as the 8 mail app with my gmail account I use for google services > >outlook is able to work better with imap in my experience, but i have pestered the live team well as the 8 team to fix the main for secondary accounts outside your passport account > > > > > > >Windows MVP, XP, Vista, 7 and 8. Can I setup a self-signed certificate which the Win8 Mail App will be happy with? Which field needs to match the server name? is it the CN field?

I don't know much about self signed certs. http://blogs.technet.com/b/exchange/archive/2012/11/26/supporting-windows-8-mail-in-your-organization.aspx#selfsigned may help.   On Thu, 6 Dec 2012 08:59:06 +0000, I_C wrote:   >Can I setup a self-signed certificate which the Win8 Mail App will be happy with? Thanks Barb! That did the trick. Basically you have to:

1. generate a self-signed certificate which has a CN with the same name as the mail server (http://www.cert-depot.com/ is very handy here - NB download both the .zip and the .pfx)

2. configure your mail server to use this certificate (which depends on your mail server)

3. then generate a certificate file in .cer format (using mmc.exe is easiest - as described here =  http://stackoverflow.com/questions/403174/convert-pfx-to-cer)

4. and then add this .cer to the Trusted Authorities Certificates on the Surface (again using mmc.exe is easiest)

At this point you'll be able to add the account in Win8 Mail App on the Surface.

Oh, what a nice solution! Thank you, I_C and Barb for the information!

BTW, I did NOT use EAS when adding my GMAIL accounts and I still have my Google contacts present in People app, that is, I believe, Gmail contacts are synchronized with Windows 8 (that is with People app) even if you choose Google type of account when adding your Gmail account to Windows Mai

I had the same issues and was able to get it to work by removing the username and leaving that blank.

Thank you! "Leaving the username blank" worked for me on Dell Inspiron 11 3147 with Windows 8.1 mail app, add Other mail IMAP account,  after days of trying different settings from my ISP.  (I don't know how to generate a self-signed certificate).
