Windows 7 & SteadyState
I bow down before you almighty Microsoft and beg most pathetically for a tiny indulgence to lessen the great suffering that has befallen our public computers. I most humbly and respectfully plea for your undeserved attention to port a STeadyState implementation unto our Windows 7 environment. The Deep Freeze of BC is $33/ license and my poor children are starving for disc protection. We know not were else to turn... I trust in your great love and wisdom and will follow on whatever path you lead me.

Hi Floyd, as you may have known that there is no plan to develop Windows 7 compatible version of Windows SteadyState, Windows SteadyState including Windows Disk Protection is not available for Windows 7. To restrict users, you can try parental control in Windows 7: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/features/parental-controls.aspx Thank you.Sean Zhu - MSFT

Except Parental Contols is available in Windows 7 Home Premium only, and most libraries are going to use windows 7 Professional to be able to join a domain. Why does't Microsoft just say they don't care and be done with it.

I agree, I've been looking at steadystate as an option for a communal, recreational PC at our company. However the OS used would obviously be Win7Pro. Such a good idea dropped for no apparent reason.

Thanks Sean, I know the official line is that there are no plans to develop StaedySTate for Win7 but I'm wondering if you have any advice on how long it will take for the new version of STeadyState to be unveiled? Since i can't afford Deep Freeze or Clean Slate and I won't deploy Vista, my library patrons will be stuck on XP for the foreseeable future. Where is the appropriate place to lodge our complaints and make our pleas for a Windows 7 version of SteadyState? YT, Floyd

Floyd, We could start a petition, I could get every IT technician who works for the Library system in Saskatchewan to sign it (Hillbilly votes count too.) Jesse

I agree with Floyd, we need some help from Microsoft, we need your help to direct our efforts. We NEED steady state for windows 7. Thank you. Jesse

I am not from Saskatchewan library system, nor am I a hillbilly, but I am an IT professional within a Public Library system. As you have heard over, and over, and over again from various posts, I too have heavily relied upon SteadyState to manage some of our public access computers. I'm blown away by this decision. I sincerely hope that Microsoft reconsiders this need. For awhile it seemed Microsoft was making a public effort to support schools and libraries. Now I feel that boat has sailed and we are left to drift in a time when we need support the most.

I think this was touched on in another SteadyState for Windows 7 thread, but Comodo Time Machine may be a viable replacement. I had trouble finding any content that would reveal the breadth of it's functionality - so I installed it and poked around. It's a lot like VMware Workstation Snapshots, but for real machines! I put together a fairly comprehensive set of screen shots and a list of its functionality here: http://csi-windows.com/blog/all/27-csi-news-general/214-free-replacement-for-microsoft-steadystate-on-windows-7-its-like-vmware-snapshots-for-real-machines D. ____________________ CSI:\> windows Put Apps On Win7 and Virtualization http://csi-windows.com/courses
