Windows 10 Apps have no Internet

So I updated from windows 7 to 10 the other day, and the problem I have now is that all windows apps and Edge have no internet connection, with the exception of windows update and activation. File explorer also seems to be affected as I can not connect to my network drives. The desktop programs work fine; My chrome, steam, and other desktop programs all have an internet connection.

I've tried reinstalling the network adapter and I have all the latest updates, but nothing seems to fix the problem.

Has anyone ran into this? Is there a solution?

Thanks

I tried flushing the DNS and checked to make sure it was running and set to automatic in services, but that wasn't the issue.

I think I found the problem, but have no idea how to fix it.

Inside Network and Sharing Center, at the top where you are suppose to see your active networks, mine instead says "You are currently not connected to any network". Even though I am connected and my internet is working for non-Microsoft programs.

When I disconnect and reconnect the cable, I noticed windows tries to discover the network, then it just shows that message in the View your active networks section. Reinstalling the latest NIC drivers didn't help either.

I reverted back to windows 7, but now I'm getting the same problem there as well. What ever happened in the window 10 upgrade seems to have completely messed up the Microsoft network discovery thing.

Inside services it seems like the items needed for that to work are running, such as the Network List Service and Network Location Awareness.

A very strange problem.

Under your Ethernet connection settings try disabling "Find devices and content" making your PC undiscoverable and see if that restores access.

I'm not seeing that option anywhere

Click on the network adapter picture in the system tray and then click network settings. Choose Ethernet in the left pane and then click on your adapter icon that comes up and change the switch to off for discoverable and see if that works.

Often this is a misinterpretation of a failure to do a DNS lookup.  That can happen if you are doing DNS via a relay through a router (e.g. using a local address with LAN timing).  If instead you try doing a lookup with an Internet address the timing will be different.

So, when this happens to me I switch to a command window and enter (for example)

nslookup  answers.microsoft.com  8.8.8.8

which is Google's Public DNS being used as an override.   Similarly you could use  tracert  8.8.8.8  to see where that gets to.

BTW if you are using a router it would be a good idea to get into its control page and find out what addresses are being used in there.  In my case I recently got a new modem from a new ISP with its own built-in wireless router and found that somehow it knows about all the old addresses!  There were signs of that in the Wi-Fi Properties Details display.  I had to override with static IPv4 addressing which I'm not happy about.  Also, I'm surprised that (apparently) I don't have any IPv6 connectivity which is going to make having a Homegroup more problematic.  I'm not sure how I'm going to clean all this up.

Good luck

I have the same exact problem, and tried pretty much anything mention, and none of those helps. It seems the old applications I had from Windows 7 were not working, while Edge, and anything new I install through the app store works too.

Same with me; edge, store etc. work absolutely fine. However Firefox, Skype, Spotify, and other applications from windows 7 cannot connect. Windows thinks the internet connection is fine. When trying to connect with Firefox I get this message: Firefox can't find the server at www.google.com. While I can use edge - as I am now.

  • My internet options where clear.
  • I have troubleshooted both adapters and programs connections to the internet, windows responds with "not enough information" - how useful.
  • I disabled my firewall, no success.
  • I disabled antivirus, no success.
  • I did a Clean Boot, no success.
  • I uninstalled VPNs, no success.
  • I restarted the DHCP and DNS Client services - they are already automatic, no success.
  • I ran Firefox and skype in windows 7 compatibility mode, no success.
  • I am using both Ethernet and Wi-Fi, no success.
  • I changed my adapters DNS settings to non-automatic and to use 8.8.8.8, no success.
  • I have done ipconfig /flushdns, no success.
  • I have done ipconfig /renew, guess what, no success.

This is driving me crazy. The thing that frustrates me most is that I know it is not that hard to solve the problem as I fixed this before (a few days ago) - I have such a bad short term memory, it is definitely something software-wise. While I had everything working I remember that the Virtual Machines in VMWare would no longer have internet connection. I also remember restarting the DHCP service.

I have VMWare network adapters - but I am unsure if they would cause a problem, I tried disabling them, nothing changed.

Nslookup appears fine in cmd:

nslookup answers.microsoft.com 8.8.8.8
Server: google-public-dns-a.google.com
Address: 8.8.8.8

Non-authoritative answer:
Name: origin.answers.ms.akadns.net
Address: 157.56.121.108
Aliases: answers.microsoft.com
          g.answers.ms.akadns.net

No errors on windows have turned up whatsoever and my only option appears to be is to revert back to Windows 7 Home Premium x64 bit in which Windows 10 seems to cause lag upon.

Also, Rainmeter seems to work which uses its plugin WebParser.dll.

FIX:

Open up command prompt with administrator privileges.

Run these commands:

  1. netsh winsock reset catalog
  2. netsh int ipv4 reset reset.log
  3. netsh int ipv6 reset reset.log
Reboot your PC.

Can't believe it took me this long to find the solution!

Hey Guys - this is the best information so far, but it didn't work for me. Running the netsh commands changed things for sure, but it didn't solve my issues. Firstly, here are the outputs from running the commands:

C:\WINDOWS\system32>netsh winsock reset catalog

Sucessfully reset the Winsock Catalog.
You must restart the computer in order to complete the reset.

C:\WINDOWS\system32>netsh int ipv4 reset reset.log
Resetting Interface, OK!
Resetting Neighbor, OK!
Resetting Path, OK!
Resetting , failed.
Access is denied.

Resetting , OK!
Restart the computer to complete this action.

C:\WINDOWS\system32>netsh int ipv6 reset reset.log
Resetting Interface, OK!
Resetting Neighbor, OK!
Resetting Path, OK!
Resetting , failed.
Access is denied.

Resetting , OK!
Resetting , OK!
Restart the computer to complete this action.

Now I have different problems:

* IE 11 - Connects to the internet (better) but after rebooting continues to have issues

* OneDrive - Shows the Loading... screen but never times out as before (different - not better)

* DropBox - gets to the login screen but then hangs on the spinner - (gets one step further , but still no syncing)

* Skype - Runs and appears to work. Except it is not working. The Home screen is blank, only call history showing is from before the Windows 10 upgrade and calls won't work. In fact, calling the Skype Test bot hangs the app - you can't hang up or close the program.

Any further ideas?

Thanks,

Paul

Paul,

The command you have tried seems to be not working well, if available, please take use of Process Monitor to chek out which part the command is trying to do and received the Access Denied error.

https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/Library/bb896645.aspx

Besides, see the following thread about the same command error:

Michael,

The threads helped me to reset the TCP/IP stack. Now I get no errors running all 3 netsh commands. However, my original problems remain:

* IE11 doesn't work - type in a URL - blank page and spinner in tab

* Skype runs but shows all contacts offline - calling Echo doesn't connect - cannot hang up the call, have to terminate Skype

* DropBox runs but I cannot log in - after providing my credentials, just get the blue screen with a spinner

* OneDrive runs, but I cannot log in - on the 'onboarding' screen, I tap "Get Started" and the next screen shows 'Loading...'

* Lync (Skype for Business) also just spins attempting to log in.

Do I need to do a fresh install? Do I need to revert to Windows 8.1?

Thanks for the help.

Paul

Well, it seems to me i've run in nearly the same problem.

upgraded win 8.1 pro to win 10. everything ( as i see for now ) works fine but IE 11 and Edge don't want to connect to (sic!) microsoft servers like msdn, technet. firefox working fine (writing from it now ).

there are two types of error when i am trying to connect:

edge: Hmm, we can't reach this page

ie11:

This page cant be displayed

Turn on TLS 1.0, TLS 1.1, and TLS 1.2 in Advanced settings and try connecting to https://msdn.microsoft.com again. If this error persists, it is possible that this site uses an unsupported protocol. Please contact the site administrator.

i found in event log tons of

A fatal alert was generated and sent to the remote endpoint. This may result in termination of the connection. The TLS protocol defined fatal error code is 10. The Windows SChannel error state is 10.

also i found, that if i have fiddler started in capturing more, both edge and ie connect to https://msdn.microsoft.com with no problems

i tried to flushdns, reset tcp stack, enable and disable IE, enable/disable ie protection mode, reset ie settings...

meantime, both connect nicely to facebook, gmail (over https ).

any ideas what to try next? except for clean install :)

Paul,

Check to see if we have installed the following udpate, after that, see if the mentioned issue insists:
