Hi every body

I downloaded Windows 7 32bit (no key yet), I've tried upgrading Windows Vista SP1 but when step 2 (expandeing files) reaches 21% the installation stops with following error "Windows could not update the computer's boot configuration. Installation cannot proceed."

I tried to install Windows 7 in a new partition but the process reaches 27% this time and stops with same error.

I've reformatted my hard disks completely and installation process reaches 99% then stops with same error.

I checked BIOS settings and found only DVD and HDD listed (no third option).

the Microsoft suggestion about the registry tweaking did not apply for me (and I tried to install a fresh copy from scratch).

I'm using 2 HDD in RAID0 configuration and works OK with Windows Vista, I did load the drivers to Windows 7 during installation but still getting same problem, any suggestion???

Try a different DVD drive. Sounds like it may be having a hard time reading the disc.

Seeing as to how the install reached all kinds of % it goes with what I've had happen before.

Edit: If it is the DVD drive then loading drivers won't help. Installing the entire OS from HDD would but I don't think win7 does that.

Unfortunately, this failure is not due to a bad downloand/bad media burn. Instead, it is likely due to your drive layout and configuration. If you are willing to reproduce the failure, do so and the provide the following information:

1) When the error message is on the screen, press the SHIFT-F10 key sequence and a command prompt should open up
2) Look on your various volumes (e.g. c:\, d:\, etc) for the "\$windows.~bt" folder in the root of the volume
3) Navigate to "\$windows.~bt\sources\panther" and copy the setupact.log file located in that directory to an archived location
4) Exit the command prompt, let Setup rollback/complete
5) Locate your setupact.log file, and copy the last 100 lines into this topic

Hardware is a Lenovo S10 Ideapad, 160 gig hard drive.

Unfortunately, this failure is not due to a bad downloand/bad media burn. Instead, it is likely due to your drive layout and configuration. If you are willing to reproduce the failure, do so and the provide the following information:

1) When the error message is on the screen, press the SHIFT-F10 key sequence and a command prompt should open up
2) Look on your various volumes (e.g. c:\, d:\, etc) for the "\$windows.~bt" folder in the root of the volume
3) Navigate to "\$windows.~bt\sources\panther" and copy the setupact.log file located in that directory to an archived location
4) Exit the command prompt, let Setup rollback/complete
5) Locate your setupact.log file, and copy the last 100 lines into this topic

please help if you have any suggestion, I'm so eager to get this thing up and running.

The log files indicate that Setup was unable to open the BCD store "BcdOpenSystemStore failed".I will look into this particular failure as I don't know the root cause but there are a couple things to investigate from your side (if you're comfortable):

As always, back up all data before you try this

• A common case for this error to occur is if your BCD store is locked down to the point that the Setup application is unable to modify it. The store is located at: "%systemdrive%\boot\BCD" (it's a file). Navigate there in an elevated command prompt and make sure that you have permissions to inspect the file. Lower the permissions to grant read/modify access to the file.
• Run the command "bcdedit /enum all" and ensure you have permissions to enumerate the store
• Check the permissions on the"%systemdrive%\boot" folder and lower them if needed (make sure you restore permissions later).

Good luck with checking this out. In the mean time, I'll see if there's anything else I can dig up.

NOTE: I noticed when I try to open BCD file using notepad I get process denied due to file is in use by another process, is this normal??

I have come to discover by trial and error what may be the answer to the problem...at least as it applies to my situation.
The problem is with the RAID controller and lack of a Vista/Windows 7 compatible driver.
My motherboard uses an older Intel ICH5 chipset to control RAID function, and there is not a Vista/Windows 7 driver available.
Windows XP drivers do not work either, even though they will install and make the RAID volume visible during file expansion.

When actual installation starts, you will get the error message : "Windows could not update the computer's boot configuration. Installation cannot proceed."

So, I have concluded that Windows 7 will NOT install on a RAID volume if that controller does not have a Vista/Windows 7capable driver available for its particular chipset. If there is not a Vista/Windows 7RAID driver for your particular machine or motherboard, you may as well forget a hardware RAID setup.

I know Penta reports that he is running Vista in a RAID0 on the machine and it is functioning, so there is probably some configuration problems as part of the underlying cause as well, depending on your particular chipset.
If anyone gets an older RAID controller to install Windows 7 with an XP driver, Id like to hear from you.
I had the SAME problem trying to install Vista, and finally aborted all attempts.
I was able to install Windows 7 on a normal HD with no problem...even thoughI could NOT install Vista successfully on the same machine.
I suppose Windows 7 does have better driver and device compatibility that Vista.
Everything looks good and seems to function properly with the exception of the "sleep" power mode.
The display sleeps, but the hard drive and cooling fans continue to run and the machine can't be awakened with the keyboard or mouse. There may be a tweak or fix for thisI think the same thing happened when XP was first introduced.
Alas, it is a 4-5 year old motherboard, so for what it's worth, Windows 7 did a pretty fair job installing and configuring drivers and devices.
I didn't have to install a single driver myself, everything was found, configured and functioned properly right off the bat, aside from the RAID controller in question.

I think I may be having a related problem. I installed, and it told me it couldn't find drivers for my RAID controller ship. This is on a Gateway laptop -- i don't even have raid enabled or anything so I didn't think there would be a problem, but the install gets stuck in a rebooting loop. See my post here for more info:

There is NO RAID device on your laptop, so that's not the problem.

Status Report(20090118):
I did the BCD thingy, but nothing seemed to change.
Probably would reformat the drive and reinstall again later.
Please, Stephen or others, my hands are itching to touch Win7 the moment the beta was released,
and I believe Penta_a and others who are suffering in this issue feel the same.
I tried asking for help at Neowin and BetaArchive,
now I'm looking at TechNet for help.

I had the same problems and came to this thread. Wouldn't get past 0, and disc reader sounded like it was searching. Burned a new image at 4X on a +R and it's currently completing installation.

I had this same problem, however I'm not using a RAID setup. I've got a single 750GB WD hard drive connected via SATA 3.0 on an EVGA 780i Motherboard. so it shouldnt be the drivers. However I believe it may be linked to possibly the amount of RAM on my motherboard? I'm trying to install the 64-bit OS and I remember that having more than one stick of RAM in my motherboard caused vista to refuse completing installation, however this is purely speculation.

In my situation I also simply shrunk the volume of my partition on my hard drive and created a second partion of 64GB on which to install windows 7, however I didnt get very far obviously :\

Anyone know if you possibly have SLI hooked up, or maybe it's another piece of hardware causing issues? I'll list my hardware list in case anyone wants to compare and see if there's a common factor...

Anyone?

I have a n EVGA 680i MB and similar configuration as yourself on one of my machines, and was wondering if you have a separate driver furnished by Nvidiafor the SATA3 controller or if it is native to Vista? If it was furnished separately, you would indeed have tro load it during initial set-up in order to get functionality of the SATA 3 drive.
I would guess this is not the case, but wanted to ask anyway.
I have heard of issues with SATA3 HD's and Vista, so I would guess that there might be a problem with W7 as well...after all, they are ____ cousins.

VISTA 64 is wierd about some memory controllers with quad sticks. TRY installing with just one stick of memory, and if successful, add your remaining sticks afterwards.
Also, try running your memory timing's in default speed during install and see if that helps.

Just so everyone knows this is an issue with my current installation of vista x64. I had attempted to dual boot it and I got the same issue. After a little browsing of the settings of my BCD I found that running bcdedit.exe finds my system's bcd registry corrupt. Anyone know how to fix this? I believe atleast in my case I should be able to fix the problem...

Simple solution found for Dual Boot errors!

Here is an update. Since no one else has seemed to find a solution I actually managed to find my own. Just to recap you on what had happened to me, I was trying to dual boot Windows 7 x64 with Windows Vista Ultimate x64. Somewhere in my use with Vista my BCD was corrupt/deleted and caused this error to appear. (Windowscould not update your computer's boot configuration.) After searching my computer I found the registry settings were correct, and file access to the folder that contained the BCD was correct, However my BCD was corrupt/missing and so I was unable to finish the installation and get my computer to dual boot. I found this out by typing bcdedit.exe in command with admin access and it gave me the warning "BCDedit.exe could not be run. BCD is either corrupt or missing".

In order to fix this it was quite simple. I had to use the original installation disc for vistato repair my computer's boot files. Unfortunately I didnt have an install disc that would work with vista since I purchased mine before SP1 came out, so in order to repair it I had to create a slipstream disc with the SP1 updates added to it. after repairing I instantly was able to see both Windows 7 and Windows Vista in my boot manager when I restarted my computer. I easily fixed and finished installation with out a hitch, and I'm now staring at internet explorer inside of Windows 7 typing this message. I hope this will help anyone else out who was trying to dual boot it and got this error. unfortunately, if you still have the error but you're trying to do a clean installation on a fresh hard drive, I dont have the answer. Hopefully someone else can help you out.

So, I have concluded that Windows 7 will NOT install on a RAID volume if that controller does not have a Vista/Windows 7capable driver available for its particular chipset. If there is not a Vista/Windows 7RAID driver for your particular machine or motherboard, you may as well forget a hardware RAID setup.

This idea has been a fundamentalpremise of installing Windows operating systems since way back in the days of Windows NT. Windows has never contained in-the-box RAID drivers, and they've always required an <F6> installation. The boot setup of Windows expects to see a single volume on a standard controller (EIDE, SATA, and *some* SCSI controllers). If hardware-level RAID has been implemented, then an external driver will most surely be required in order to install an operating system.

Lawrence, your generalization is true, but if you had fully read the post, you would have understood that my comment was concerning the use of RAID drivers developed for O/S's other than Vista and W7, and their compatibility with the same when trying to install the controller during setup.

I have two 160GB SATA hard drives in a RAID 0 array. A 47MB Fat Primary partition contains BootMagic which controls a 7.7GB NTFS Windows XP Primary partition and a 58.6GB NTFS Vista Ultimate Primary partition. I formatted the Vista partition from the XP partition using Partition Magic and disabled BootMagic and set the 58.6GB partition active.

I then restarted the computer and the Windows 7 ISO DVD started just like a Vista installation DVD. I used the RAID floppy for the Intel ICH5R chipset on a Gigabyte 81875 Motherboard when requested and the files expanded successfully but shortly after that the following error message appeared:-

Windows could not update the computers boot configuration. Installation cannot proceed.

I then restarted the computer with the Vista DVD in the drive and the Vista Ultimate installation went through as normal.

When I installed Service Pack 1 on Vista immediately after Vistas installation had completed, Vista crashed to a blue screen within a few minutes. It did this on three occasions before I was able to complete the SP1 installation. Since then Vista has been unstable crashing during large file transfers to a blue screen. The previous installation of Vista on this partition had been free from crashes. I plan to reinstall Vista in the hope of restoring its earlier stability.

I know you suspect the Intel chipsets driver as contributing to the installation problem but as I can install Vista I cannot understand the problems with Windows 7.

I'm not clear on your post.

You say you have a RAIDO array with two 160G HD's...thats 320 G's of storage. So what do you mean by a 47 MB fat primary partition... You mean 47G's? and then you added a 58G partition for Vista?

Let's stop here...Partition Magic...Krap. All sorts of boot errors are common using it, especially with a RAID array.

Why did you use it in the first place? The disc management utilityin XP is fine for any partitioning/formatting that you might needof course it wont shrink partitions as does the same utility in Vista.

Did I understand that you tried installing W7 on the Visa partition, used the ICH5R driver during installation, but ended up with the boot configuration error and the installation ofW7failed? At that point you rebooted and reinstalled Vista? When you installed SP-1 you started getting crashes?

Was your original Vista install working fine without SP-1?

Firstly, the ICH5R chipset really only works under Windows 2000 and XP with the available Intel drivers. The reason you probably coaxed Vista to install was because you had XP installed and were then using Partition Magic within XPto create a "virtual partition" for Vista. I am frankly surprised that it even worked.

When you reinstalled Vista, you did so on its ownprimary partition newly created within the array not using PMagic. Again, I'm surprised you made it to the desktop, but when you installed SP-1, it updated some device drivers (probably the Intel Raid) and now you're having the problems.

Question? Did you install the MB chipset .inf files( from either the Gigabyte or Intel websites) immediately after you got to the desktop after the new installation of Vista??

The problem IS the Intel Chipset drivers. Thats what this whole thread is about.

I was the originator of this thread...I have that same RAID controller chip on my ASUS MB on my test PC.

And like so many of us that want to run RAID on our machines for performance, we are limited by those chipsets and the manufacturers commitment to provide current drivers. If you're set on using RAID and want to run the more current O/S's like Vista and W7, then you're going to have to update your hardware.

If It was me, and you really wanted to test the watersI would backup all of my data and files and then delete and rebuild my RAID0 array, then try to install Vista using the ICH5R drivers on a floppy or burned onto a CD.When asked for the initial size of your first partition you create, give it 100G. That's plenty of spaceto install Vista and a great amount of other programs. If that succeeds ( and I don't think it will), you can go into device manager and partition the rest of the array...I would suggest another 100G for a secondand then what's left for a third partition(somewhere under 120G will be the case).

Then I would try to update it to SP-1 and see if you get the blue screens.

If you have a stable PC, then you have walked on water, my friend.

If not, I would reinstall XP onto your machine and be done with it. Then use it as a backup PC and build myself a new PC with some current hardware to run Vista and eventually W7.

I built a new machine specifically for Vista and it runs flawlesslynever crashes. I am not going to rush right out and buy Windows 7 because it basically IS Vista (on the same kernel processes) with better driver support and a new feature here and there.

I have an idea that Microsoft will give Vista users a chance to upgrade to 7 for a greatly discounted price.

Guess if all fails you can always go back to the original way you had it with XP and then create a partition with P Magic on which you can install Vista or 7, but I can see nothing but future problems in it.

Regarding my use of Power Quests Partition Magic, I have used it since the days of Windows 98 when I needed to change FAT partitions into NTFS without loss of their data.

Using Boot Magic requires a small FAT Primary Partition of about 50 MB which must be inside the 8GB mark on the hard drive, hence the 47MB partition. I started with two Windows XP partitions, one of 7.7GB for Internet use and the other of 58GB for photography. In order for Boot Magic to have control of both operating systems they must both start before the 8GB mark. When each OS is chosen in Boot Magic it hides the other OS so that the one in use is always C partition. To install a new OS on either the 7.7GB or the 58GB you have to disable Boot Magic, format the intended destination and make it active which hides the other OS. On restarting with the OS disc in the drive installation is usually straightforward only requiring the floppy of the Intel Raid ICH5R driver to be introduced when requested, (copied from the Gigabyte Motherboard CD).

When I purchased Vista I formatted the 58GB during the installation and used the floppy as usual with no problem, giving a very stable Vista. [The partition it occupied was not virtual but was recognized even when I ditched Partition Magic for Paragon Partition Manager 9 and Paragon Drive Backup 9. I did this because Partition Magic does not read correctly any partition used by Vista.]

I repeated this with the Windows 7 DVD with the error message appearing just after expanding by 100%.

I then put the Vista DVD in and re-installed Vista, using the driver floppy when requested, without a problem but I cant say whether it was stable as I immediately installed SP1. This caused blue screen crashes on three occasions within 5 minutes of starting, the fourth attempt completed but Vista is now unstable.

I had been considering dispensing with the Raid array but decided to experiment with it before breaking it up.

Besides the 320GB Raid 0 drive which has 9 partitions I have a new internal1TB SATA drive with 8 partitions containing the contents of the Raid array. I had intended to move to the larger drive because a Raid array has twice the chance of hard drive failure.

Until I read your post I had assumed that the ICH5R driver was independent of the OS and just dealt with any data that was thrown at it allocating bits of data alternately to each drive regardless of content.

A FIX FOR THIS PROBLEM!!

I recently purchased a new Dell Laptop pre-installed with vista, now chances are company's like dell use 3rd party boot uploader software and things can go missing in this process.

I to was very excited to try out Windows 7 but kept getting the pain in the a*s error of Boot Configuartion could not be updated installation cannot proceed.

After searching through about 50 sights and about 10 failed installation attempts waste of time registry editing and all that other bull i started feeling a little ripped off as i though i had downloaded a 2.5G dud but i was wrong.. I just happened to put my Vista disk in and did a mere 2 clicks... then a loading bar came up less than 30 seconds later the computer had restarted and Windows 7 had somehow started to install itself minus the disc but im not complaining i guess its becuase the files were there from the many earlier failed attempts..

HERES THE FIX
- Place the Windows 7 Disk into your disk drive, completely log into your computer. Then run the disk from "My Computer"

- Click Install

- Input your preferences ie (updates, clean install or upgrade whatever.)

- Sit back and watch the loading bar progress and then wait for the iminent Boot config error

- Close the program and insert your Original Vista disk

- Restart your computer and BOOT FROM DISK

- You wil then see a Black screen saying Loading Files.. Wait for that to complete (should be a minute or 2)

- Then you will see the vista installation box, Enter your Language, Keyboard Layout etc

- You will then see a box pop up with 3 options.

1) Install

2) Check compatability online

3) Repair

-Click repair and follow the instructions, The program will then scan for files that are corrupt/missing in yout boot files and other files of that association

- Once the scan has finished (around 30 seconds) a small box will pop up stating a few errors and it will ask if you want Vista to repair them and restart your computer, Simply press yes and YOUR DONE.

- Your computer will restart and all the files that were preventing Windows 7 to install are now out of the way and in the right place. Your Windows 7 Installation should then continue after the computer as restarted. Even without the disk (mine did) if not just log on and run the disk again and within a few minutes youll have your Windows 7 up and ready to go!

The whole repair process will take no more than 1-2 Minutes

Hope this helps you out guys, i stumbled upon it by mistake.

Not that familiar with PMagic and how it affected the boot table...read up on it and understand how it is installed now. But my explaination of how you probably got it to work with Vista is still correct.

All I have to say is if it works for ya and makes ya happy, then do it.

I would stilladvise you to scrap the partition magic...

You were quite right to suggest I stopped using Partition Magic. After my last message I was using the RAID 0 array with partitions for XP and Vista when Partition Magic informed me that some partition errors needed correcting and I rather foolishly allowed it to correct them for me. After that I could no longer open either XP or Vista so I broke up the RAID array and used Paragon Partition Manager 9 to partition a new 500GB SATA hard drive. I installed XP on the first Primary partition and Vista on the second. I used Partition Manager to prepare the drive for installing Windows 7 on a third Primary partition and all went according to plan. I used Partition Managers Boot Manager Wizard to allow me to choose which operating system to start up and I chose to hide the operating systems that were not in use. I have had occasional blue screen crashes on all three operating systems but I suspect this is a hardware problem. Changing the power supply didnt help so I installed XP and Vista onto an old IDE hard drive with the same type of random blue screen crashes, with the message lasting only one or two seconds; not long enough to read it all. The crashes are much more frequent in Vista and Windows 7 but I am convinced that changing more of the hardware will eventually sort this out.

Sorry to have taken so long to respond but the destruction of my RAID 0 array took with it the link to this forum and I have only just found it again.

facing similar problem. I think i have to reinstall vista and then windows 7. I was looking BCD file editor or fixer for windows xp but couldnt find one

I can confirm that raid drivers update to ver. 5.5.0.1035 cured "could not update the computer's boot configuration. Installation cannot proceed" error also for me (875 chipset m/b, clean install on raid0/ICH5R)

I found that for a Silicon Image Controller that if you load the XP driver the SATA drive is not found by XP or Windows 7 RC. If I load the NT/2000 driver, XP and windows 7 and Vista locate the SATA drive at boot up. However, the Windows 7 RC disk will not boot and gives a NTLDR error code 5. This is weird because Windows 7 does not even need this driver. My workaround for this was to download the Vista recovery disc (which does boot up), disconnect my C drive, and reboot and let it run until it 0ffers the choice to repair or install Vista, then I swap the Vista disc for the Windows7 recovery disc and hit the repair button. This then allowed me to boot from the partition that I had loaded Windows 7 onto and remove the C drive that I initially downloaded the software onto.


What a farce. Judging by the mass of questions on thsi issue, it makes you wonder if anyone at Microsft has access to a computer more than five years old. Green is to reuse what you have - not throw away and buy new.

Anyone loading and using this pre release software is a hero and its a shame that MS doesn't reward their sterling efforts with a working version free on completion.

Just to clarify..... the functionality of HARDWARE drivers is the responsibility of the HARDWARE vendor. Microsoft does not write hardware drivers, they are written by and provided by the vendor .. but subject to WHQL testing by Microsoft.

I'm quite intrigued with your results from the Silicon Image Controller and based on your statements, my only reponse would be that's one vendor I'll be sure to stay away from when buying hardware.

Logan, Just wondering if you had a disk or partition with XP installed and runninig in your system. The only way I got win7 to install and run was to unplug my XP drivefrom the sys. If I wanted to boot XP I had to plug it in. What a pain. I'm asking because I wonder if your scenario will work for me. Istill Run XP on this system (Asus P4P8X SE 3.4 P4 Xtreme, 1gb DDR in dualWD 160gb Sata 2)and not ready to give it up yet. My main system is a duel boot with XP Pro and Vista Ult. on the same drive in RAID 1 with no problems. The P4 XP system is not in RAID and is pretty basic in configuration.

FYI Logan,
this is not a fix for me. Remember this is a dual boot XP/Win7 I'm talking about. Has nothing to do with Vista. Vista boot repair is not compatable with XP.

You saved my life. Extremely simple fix for an annoying problem that everyone else can't seem to solve.

Hi same problem happen to my Acer m1640. I tried 2 ways from internet but failed. finanly, I decide to delete all partitions then install Windows 7. It went very well without any problem.

i encountered this when reinstalling w7starter on an asus eee pc. here's how i got the install going again:

when I saw the error, clicked ok and got back to the install/repair screen

pressed shift-f10 to get the command window up

typed BOOTREC /rebuildbcd into the window

it searched for windows versions, asked me if I wanted to add a boot entry for windows.old, i said NO (i'm side by side reinstalling a new windows)

asked me if i wanted to add c:\windows, i said YES

it repaired the bcd database

typing bcdedit into the window produced no errors

clicked REPAIR in the setup interface

it found some problems with the startup, i clicked REPAIR & RESTART

and setup is proceeding again
