WinPE and 802.1x
We have an environment with certificate based 802.1x access protection (with the required switch support) on the wired LAN.Can we use WinPE in this environment? The plan was to enable automatic migration of machine-images from one machine to another. Basically move the contents of one hardware box to another identical box - easier than moving the box physically. The steps are something along the lines of:a) WinPE boot source machingb) Grab an image of the source machine (ImageX?) and put it on a serverc) Reprovision source machine with a fresh disk-image (ImageX?)d) WinPE boot dest machinee) Reprovision dest machine with previously saved source machine image (again ImageX?)f) Boot into the exactly same setup that was on the source machineAny thoughts or pointers?Googling this gave me a hit on http://www.microsoft.com/technet/community/chats/trans/network/07_0419_tn_dhcp.mspx.Look for the question "How is the Microsoft way to install clients in a NAP / 802.1x Environment? WinPE has not Certificate and 802.1x support". Unfortunately the step-by-step document linked to in the answer doesn't contain a mention of WinPE.

Try asking this question in the OSD alias, as WinPE is supported by the OSD process. I don't know the answer to the question, but someone there will be able to assist you.

Hmmmm... Could you elaborate a bit? If I'm correct the "OSD alias" is an internal MS distribution list?If not - how would one ask the question in the OSD alias?

Hi, I believe Wally was referring to the OSD forum on this site: http://forums.microsoft.com/TechNet/ShowForum.aspx?ForumID=1824&SiteID=17 Thanks, Jim Bradbury

Hello!I have read through the posts, and they gave info on the 802.1x issue, new NAP with W2008 but unfortunately didnt answer the question of the WINPE deployment on a network using wired 802.1x authentication.Any more help on this issue would be very much appreciated!SincerelyGreg M.

Microsoft has now released a hotfix for WINPE 2.1 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/975483) and WINPE 3.0 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/972831. Unfortuantly no document was included, I'm working on a document of how to get this working with SCCM OSD 2007 SP2. I can send you a draft if you are interested.
