Will Windows 10 Download finish before the end of 2015?

Over a month ago I registered for the Windows 10 update. Over 3 weeks ago the status showed as 'download in progress'

Am I being unrealistic in expecting this to complete by now?

I have helped other people with Windows 10, and it completed much sooner than that. It did not go smoothly, but it did complete within a couple of weeks.

I have a very high end computer system on a 50 Mbps network, so I cannot believe my equipment or service is slow. My actual worry is that it will never finish because sometime in February/March of 2015 I received an update for Windows 8.1 that failed, and it has been failing repeatedly since then. I suspect that perhaps this failing update is preventing Windows 10 from downloading successfully.

Is there some other way to force Windows 10?

I am software developer with over 40 years experience, so please answer with that in mind.

What is the report in Windows 10 Upgrade App? Does it displays update is in progress?

Are you able to install other Windows Updates?

Try restart your PC and try run Windows Update again.

Yes, the Windows 10 upgrade app shows "download in progress"

Some other Windows Updates have successfully installed since "download in progress" started, but the one that has been failing since March continues to fail.

I have restarted my PC over half a dozen times since the Windows 10 upgrade app shows "download in progress" - and I have rerun Windows update almost as many times.

Basically I have done all the normal things one does when fighting with Microsoft software.

The fastest way to get the upgrade is to download the ISO.  An ISO is like a dvd so to use it you will need to right click>mount.  Start the upgrade from within windows.
WARNING:  DO NOT USE THESE TO DO A CLEAN INSTALL (until after you have already updated).  If you do you will not be able to activate it unless you have previously upgraded to win 10 and activated it.  You then will be forced to re-install your previous OS before upgrading to win 10

The Official Final Windows 10 download is now available

Use the download tool to create ISO media to update your windows.

Thanks so much for the link!

I originally tried to do it this way, but could not find the download site after a long time searching. I have Windows 10 installed now, and things seem to be running fine.

I am not sure why Microsoft always insist on using the most complicated solutions for things first, but that consistently seems to be my experience with them.

The upgrade using Windows Update for a machine registered for it was pretty painless in my case. It downloaded and installed on the first day after Windows 10 was released. I believe it was probably the best option for many users who would struggle to download an ISO and run the upgrade themselves.
