Why does a subreport have to be deployed before I can use it
If I'm working on a reporting project in BIDS, and I have a main report and a subreport, why do I have to deploy the subreport to report manager before I can use it in my main report, becuase if I have to make changes to the subreport, I have to re-deploy before I can test it again in the main report. Where are you trying to test your main report? in BIDS project or Report Manager? I do not believe you have to deploy the report first to be able to view/test the parent report. You could preview the report in the BIDS project. If you are getting an error can you post it?

If the main and sub report are in same folder then no need to deploy it. You can test it from BIDS itself. However, if they are in different folder, then you need to deploy the reports otherwise you will not be able to test it. This is because the BIDS folder struture is different from Report Server folder structure.Suresh My Scribbling

The error message I get is "The subreport Subreport1 could not be found at the specified location", both the subreport and main report are in the same folder. ThanksDan1104

Hi Dan1104, How did you specify the subreport? In Reporting Services 2005, please right click the Subreport and select Properties. Then check Subreport dropdown list. In Reporting Services 2008, please right click the Subreport and select Subreport Properties… Then check the subreport name in the Use this report as a subreport list box. By generally, the name of the report can be specified in the following ways: · For a report in this project, select the name of the report from the drop-down list. · For a report published to a report server configured for native mode, use a full or relative path to the report, without the file name extension. If the report is in the same folder as the current report, use the name of the report only. If the report is in a different folder, use a relative path to the report (for example, ../Reports/DetailReport). So if both the main report and the sub report are in the same folder in a project, we can specify the report name to the Subreport directly. Then we can preview the main report with subreport embedded in BIDS. Thanks, Tony Chain Please remember to mark the replies as answers if they help and unmark them if they provide no help

Hi Tony, I'm using 2008, and I selected the subreport by going into the subreport properties and using the drop down in the 'use this report as a subreport' box. The only thing the subreport has is a text box. Both reports are in the same folder and I still get this error: "The subreport 'Subreport1' could not be found at the specified location /reportsub1. Please verify that the subreport has been published and that the name is correct. Thanks, Dan Dan1104

Have you previewed the sub-report on it's own to verify the report runs correctly in BIDS? I have found if i don't preview the sub-report before running the main report, changes i have made are not reflected.

Stephane, That worked. I had to preview the subreport first, before I was able to see it on my main report. The problem I have now is that I don't see the subreport on page 1 of the main report, I have to go to page 2 and back to page 1. thanks again,Dan1104
