Why do you need delete permissions to edit the file name of a document in a document library? How can users change file name without having Delete permission?
I have a document library and a group of users who should be able to upload documents and only change the metadata. They should not be able to edit the document or delete the document. So I setup a permission level with Add and Edit Items. When the user uploads the document, the edit form is shown where he/she changes the file name and comment fields, but the users get "Access Denied " error. I noticed that the error must be because the user is changing the file name field, as the document is uploaded and the comments field is also updated but the file name is not changed. But if I give Delete permissions to these users, the error disappears. I do not want to give them Delete permissions but I want to allow them to change the file name, can anyone help me here about how to achieve this? Also How do I prevent them from editing the document but still they can edit the metadata?Any help would be greatly appreciated..Thanks.

For changing properties (like the name) you also need read rights. Make sure he has them. Kind regards, Eric van GlabbeekWilling to learn everything about Sharepoint there is to learn. My blog

Here's a great article and diagram that shows all the permissions and their relevant dependencies. It's a great reference for identifying what permissions are related.http://johnholliday.net/post/2008/09/06/SharePoint-Permission-Dependency-Chart.aspx- M- Michael Mukalian - MCTS: MOSS 2007 Configuration - http://www.mukalian.com/blog

Yes, the role already has read permissions. Thanks Michael for the nice reference. But I still am not able to allow the user to edit the file name without Delete permission :(

Hi I do have reproduced your issue on MOSS 2007 SP2. I think it is impossible to have edit and add permissions without delete item permissions to make modification to a document file name.Actually, SharePoint requires both edit, add and delete permissions when users try to edit a file name in document library. Therefore, you cannot manage to do it without any of those three permissions. Thanks for your understanding!Best Regards!

So file name is not treated as any other metadata :( This is a bummer...

I agree, this is very annoying.

Here is an obvious workaround: http://replicrux.com/2011/03/31/cannot-rename-listitem-without-delete-rights-sharepoint-2007.aspx
