Why am I being prompted for a password in IE but not in Firefox?
On the share point portal if a user tries to download a document using Internet Explorer, they are prompted for their password (sometimes several times) before they are allowed to do so even though they are already authenticated to the Share-point site. Using Internet Explorer I was prompted twice for a password Using Firefox I was not prompted for a password Any ideas?

Hi there. Do you have "Enable Integrated Windows Authentication" enabled in Internet Explorer? Regards, MagnusMy blog: InsomniacGeek.com

You may get password prompt if your IE configuration - User Authenitcation settings- is set to prompt for user name password. Remove the above user authentication settings and set it to 'Automatically logon using current user name password' option. Also try adding the site/ document library path to the trusted sites at IE -Tools -Internet Options -Security - Trusted sites - Sites. Also refer the thread below : http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/sharepointgeneral/thread/a9137178-8ef5-4370-9c3e-dffaf871ea16Regards, Aj (http://www.ajittgeorge.blogspot.com) MCTS

If you are using Windows Auth (NTLM or Kerberos) then IE is able to speak that and had the ability to pass the user context for the logged in user. FireFox does not support Windows Auth methods and only support Basic Authentication. This means that the user context cannot be passed and users are prompted to log in even if they are on the same network. If you are prompted twice, then I would look for something like an image that is referencing a different path, hence it requires a separate authentication request. Sachin, Did you add the site under local intranet? It should be under Trusted sites Can you please check once whether your SharePoint url to the IE trusted site: IE >> Tools >> Internet Options >> Security >> Trusted sites TAB >> Click on SITES >> Add the url and unchecked the "Require server verification.." check box. Also as Ajith said, IE >> Tools >> Internet Options >> Security >> Trusted sites TAB >> Custom Level >> At the end, under User authentication , select 'Automatic logon using current user name password ' option. Thanks, Himadrish
