Which site templates include View Only Permission Level?
AFAICT, the View Only permission level is the same as Read, except the Open Item (0x20) base permission is removed. SharePoint documentation (2007) say there are five default permission levels, and these do not include View Only. Why then does the View Only permission level appear if one creates a new site using the Blank site template? The Team Site template also creates sites with the View Only permission level -- it generates the same 6 permission levels as Blank site. However, the Search Center template does not create View Only permission level. Why does Search Center have fewer permission levels than Blank site; doesn't that seem counterintuitive?

Hi Howard, Actually, there are six default permission levels in MOSS 2007. You can refer to: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc721640(office.12).aspx The default permission levels are different for different site template cause they perform different functions. Sometimes the default permission levels may not satisfy the requirements of users, but we can create permission levels by ourselves. You can create your own permission level with the following step: Go to Site settings>People and group>Site Permissions>Actions>Edit Permissions>Settings>Permission levels>Edit Permission Levels Then, you can add or delete the permission levels as you want.

http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-sharepoint-services-help/permission-levels-and-permissions-HA010100149.aspx Excerpt: "Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 includes five permission levels by default. " So, now you can see what I previously have discovered -- there "five" or "six" default permission levels, apparently documented poorly and with little to no explanation for the distinction. Thanks for the explanation of how to use the GUI, but actually I was already aware of that -- as well as how to access these programmatically -- I used the object model to extract the bit masks and find the exact difference between "Read" and "View Only" -- as explained in my original post above, it is one big flag only. But I wonder if you or anyone knows answers to my questions above?

I can answer your last question but you won't like the answer. > Why does Search Center have fewer permission levels than Blank site; Because that was the way it was designed to be. You may think that a stupid statement but you could also ask things like why are there some functions in Publishing sites (i.e. sites based on the Publishing template) that aren't in "normal" sites (and vice versa) and get the same answer. Only the development team for MOSS 2007 know their thought processes at the time (and it wouldn't surprise me if they've forgotten as in the meantime they moved on to the current version and probably now to thinking about the version after that).
