Which is the most stable SharePoint Server 2010 CU after Service Pack 2 (KB2687453)?

Facing Issue with:

OOB Approval workflow status stuck starting if there is required column in the document library.

Solution here says to apply CU.

Which is the most stable SharePoint Server 2010 CU after Service Pack 2 (KB2687453)? Lastly we have applied KB2687453 patch. Which CU should be applied next?

Thanks in advance.

Hello Synoverge,

In thread you are referring to they say it is fixed in June 2013 CU (KB2817527):
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/sharepoint/en-US/5a6e6e83-b59f-4099-a86f-a07723ff2b98/workflow-stuck-in-starting-state-after-applying-sharepoint-2010-cu-december-2012?forum=sharepointadminprevious

So you could install that specific CU. But you could also install one of the latest, since those also contain this fix. It's up to you!

As the builds are cumulative, each new release contains all the hotfixes and security updates that were included with the previous SharePoint Server 2010 update package releases.

Our company policy is next-to-last CU.

Thanks Dennis.

My last applied patch is SharePoint Server 2010 Service Pack 2 (KB2687453). But seems June 2013 CU came before SharePoint Server 2010 SP2. Resolving workflow issue is in June CU 2013 fix.

But I am confused whether I should apply August 2013 CU or is it ok if we apply June 2013 CU and then apply August 2013 CU?

Also is August 2013 CU is stable one?

Thanks a ton.

Hello Synoverge,

Sorry, you were right. SP2 was after June 2013 CU. So the first one you can apply is August 2013 CU. But that had some issues, you can read about those issues in this article:
http://www.toddklindt.com/blog/Regressions/SharePoint2010SP2.aspx

October 2013 CU was the first one without any major bugs (as far as I know):
http://www.toddklindt.com/blog/Regressions/October2013CU.aspx

But it all depends on what you want. Personally I would go for April 2014 CU.

There aren't any unstable CUs.  They aren't beta patches and SharePoint isn't a beta product.  It is possible, since every environment is unique, that something could break when applying a patch.  But that applies to pretty much every computer application there is, not just SharePoint.  But that's why we have test/lab environments right?  RIGHT?

As a general rule when it's time to apply a CU to fix an issue you are having, might as well go with the current one.  After testing of course.

Hi Dennis,

Thanks a ton.

The issue which I am facing regarding OOTB Workflow stuck on Starting, the article that I mentioned says to apply June 2013 CU. But since SP2 was released after June 2013 CU, I though I should go with the August 2013 CU.

But article below says that August 2013 CU might create problems and so that it states to apply June 2013 CU followed by August 2013 CU. I am confused whether it is the right approach to follow this sequence?

June 2013 CU - August 2013 CU - Other CU's released later on (if required)

Thanks a lot for helping me.

Hi,

I can understand that we do have test environments but since it is critical, I am just asking which of the CU is most stable among all after applying SharePoint Server SP2.

Minor bugs will always be there in almost all the hotfixes. Just wanted to know the most stable one.

My issue is regarding OOTB workflow which remains in Starting status only. Article which I have mentioned in the post says that June 2013 CU should resolve it. But since I have already upgraded to SharePoint Server SP2 which was released after June 2013 CU. So I am confused whether it is ok to apply June 2013 CU which was released before SP2 patch.

Thanks.

Correct, minor bugs will be there, but since every environment is different, I'm sure you can appreciate why no on can answer that question for you (which on is the most stable one?) but you.  There is no "most stable" one.  Download it to your environment and test it is the only way you can figure out what works for your environment.

As far as which CUs and fixes are included with SP2, those types of answers can be found in the KB article for a given Service Pack.  For SharePoint SP2, it is here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2687453/en-us

Edit:  Also, if a CU doesn't apply to your enviornment (I.E. you are running a later version than it is for, or incorrect version) it will tell you that it doesn't apply to your system and won't install.

I know that no fix will be the most stable. Anyways I got my answer from few blogs. Thanks.

August CU will fix the OotB Workflows. But there were still a couple of issues with webparts published from SharePoint Designer, and web layouts that were changed to enhance acessibility for people with visibility impediments.
I think only the FEB 14 really addressed these properly.
And we only need to install one patch, as C stands for Cumulative.

Hi Thanks a ton,

Ya I just applied June 2013 CU followed by August 2013 CU on my development server and it resolved OOTB Workflow issue.

So on Production Server do I need to directly apply Feb 2014 CU or do I need to follow June CU 2013 - August CU 2013 - February 2013 CU sequence?

Thanks a lot.

You only need one CU. Just beware that all those are post-SP1 hotfixes.
