Where is the location of default.aspx in our sharepoint site
I am having difficulty locating the physical location default.aspx file in our sharepoint site. It's not located in the inetput\wwwroot\PortNumber location It's not located in the C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\12\TEMPLATE\FEATURES location. Where may I find the physical location of this particular file, so that if we need to restore it, we can. Thank you very much!

Under C:\Program Files\Common Files\microsoft shared\Web Server Extensions\12\TEMPLATE I only have "Layouts" there is no default.aspx page. Any other places where it may be hiding?

The 'file' is actually held in the database. In short the default.aspx that is in the file system under the the 12 hive is really just the template, when you create a site which uses the file is 'ghosted' into the database. If you want to back it up, open your site in SharePoint Designer, you can see the default.aspx file there and do a copy & paste to make a copy of it.

I had typed out something similar to Mulk's, but I'll go further... If your only fear is a backup, then the default page, and every other page, is backed up with your regular SQL Server backup routines of the contentdb. On a more liquid scale, you could implement version control, or grab the code using SPD and save to a local file.Steve Clark, MCTS | Twin-Soft.com
