Where are the SQL databases created during MOSS 2007 Standard Install?
Hello all, I just finished my install of MOSS 2007 Standard. I installed it on a VM running Server 2003 and SQL Server 2005 Enterprise. As promised in the Quick Start, upon completion of the install, MOSS created a SSP, installed Central Administration, and created the first SharePoint site. However, when I open SQL Server Management Studio I don't see any databases. The Quick Start file mentions that the MOSS setup will install "SQL Server 2005 Express Edition and use it to create the configuration database and content database for your SharePoint site". I don't see SQL Server 2005 Express in my Add/Remove Programs, however. Can anyone tell me where the databases are? I need to move them to another drive because of disk space reasons. Thanks, Kate

Did you choose the basic installation method? If so the databases should reside in a windows internal database. This is typically bad practice as there is no way to upgrade out of that situation. You are going to want to run the config wizard to disconnect it from the current farm (internal database) and then run it again to create a new farm specifying your database server. SharePoint MVP | Developer | Administrator | Speaker-- Twitter -- Blog - http://nextconnect.blogspot.com

> This is typically bad practice as there is no way to upgrade out of that situation. Incorrect as you can still use the database to go to a full MOSS 2007 installation. Just to clarify one thing Chris mentioned...if you're installing Microsoft Office SharePoint Server (MOSS) 2007, the Basic install option (as well as the Stand-alone option available after selecting the Advanced install option) creates a new SQL Server Express instance on the target server and installs the SharePoint databases in it. The Windows Internal Database (WID) is only used when you select the Basic or Stand-alone installation options in Windows SharePoint Services v3, not MOSS. SQL Server Express's databases are limited to 4 GB in size, whereas the WID's databases are not limited in size. I tried the config wizard with no luck – it never stopped to prompt me for settings. I read the help file for the config wizard and it specifically said that it won’t prompt you for any settings changes if you selected Basic or Advanced > Stand Alone during setup (I selected Basic). For myself, since I’m working with a brand new install, I just uninstalled MOSS and reinstalled using Advanced > Complete (as suggested by this thread ). Ironically, I had a star in my notes from my MOSS setup class to be sure to select Advanced > Complete which I apparently overlooked. :P My bad for not reading my own notes properly :( Thanks for the assistance and insight!
