When trying to access SharePoint or Central Administration 3.0 a "503 Service Unavailable" error is returned, App Pools stop
Hi!Im having problems with my WSS. After installing it I'm not able to access the central admin and when I try to do so I get a 503 - service unavail. When I check the event log I get this message "Programpoolen SharePoint Central Administration v3 har inaktiverats. Ett fel uppstod när tjänsten Windows Process Activation (WAS) startade den arbetarprocess som betjänar programpoolen SharePoint Central Administration v3." (loosely transelated; The Programpool in SharePoint C.A v3 has been disabled. An error occured when the service Windows Process Activation (WAS) started the workprocess that serves the programpool SharePoint C.A v3.)With event id: 5059 and source: WAS.I've already seen a few posts on the subject and what I've tried so far is:* Disabled IPv6 and removed its hostfile entry* Tripple checked the password and tried diffrent users under "Programpool - SharePoint C.A - advanced - identity"* Reboot of machine and IIS7I'm currently running Windows Server 2008 SP2 (32-bit) with WSS3 SP2.I can start the programpool, but everytime I try to access SP C.A the pool stops and I get the "503".Has any one got any suggestions?Any help is welcome Tnx!

tell us which user account have you used for application pool1. Verify the username and password in the Central Administration App Pool (right click->Properties->Identity[tab])2. Verify that any services that are running relating to IIS or WSS/MOSS are using valid usernames and passwords.3. Verify that any services running for SQL Server are using the right username and password.4. Verify that the account in question has the proper access to the sharepoint databases Best Regards, Ammar MCT

Tank you for a quick replyI'm using the account "sharepoint"1. The account under this "tab" is domain/sharepoint and I've re-enterd the password2. The only service I can find that is running under that username is: " Windows SharePoint Services Timer"3. I have rechecked the username and password and they are correct4. The username has full access to the db. (Owner)Still isnt working :(

I also tried to access other webpages, and it worked fine...

Hi All, I had the exactly the same problem. After system start the Central admin 3 Apppool was in stopeed state. After I started it as a domain admin, it entered started state. When I tried to visit the central admin webpage, it stopped immedietly. The problem was the running Identity. I changed it from domain admin to LocalSystem, and voilá, Central Admin webpage is reachable. This is my test MOSS 2007 farm on Win2k8r2, SQL 2005 SP3, MOSS 2007 SP2. I hope I helped. Best, Tamas

I know this is a old thread, however just wanted to leave my $0.02. When you did this, did you publish the GPO settings? I ran into the exact same issue and republishing group policy fixed it.

No, I didn't. I just set it manually.

@Tamas: Did you ever get things to work correctly? I am just now experiencing the same problem and am at a loss for things to try. I feel like I have done everything . . . uninstalled MOSS 2007, etc. still the same error (503) appears . . . it seems like the only way that I got around it is to use LocalSystem, but that doesn't seem like the correct thing to do. I'm also concerned that if I don't use the correct app pool identity that it could affect the permissions that domain users have on my SharePoint site . . . please help me.

Hi, Yes, I did, but using the localsystem account is not recommended. Create a dedicated domain account and set that the specified account in the IIS application pool->yourappool, right click, advanced settings. And set the permissions in the SQL server and assign the permissions to the used database. Then try to start the appool and check the website. Best, Tamas
