When is the top level url in WSS specified?
This is such a simple question but I cannot figure out how to do this. What determines the top level url in WSS? Is it during the web application or site collection setup? Do I have to configure alternate access mappings? I just installed and created a brand new web application and site collection and my url is http://servername. I would like to change this to a more user friendly url. Any help is appreciated.

Hi, You can do this using Alternate Access Mappings Open up your SharePoint Central Administration on the server running SharePoint. Navigate to Operations under Central Administration. Open up Alternate access mappings under Global Configuration Click Edit Public URLs Select your Alternate Access Mapping Collection (your web application) Then enter the respective URLs that the application will be accessed via. add an entry (Host A) in your DNS to point to the SharePoint Server IP using the new URL name I usually do an iisreset /noforce after this Best Regards, Ammar MCT http://ahmed-ammar.blogspot.com Posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights.

Thank you so much for the info. Is there a way to specify this without having to do that? Can I do it when creating the site collection or web application setup?
