When assigning an owner in a SharePoint 2007 list and setting an alert e-mail the mail never arrives.
I have added a "New Issue" a few months ago but it is taken away from this site (don;t know why). I am working on a SharePoint 2007 Environment (version 12.0.0.6545). When I set an Alert Me on a list, an e-mail is sent to me. WHen I add someone to a site within my site collection, an e-mail is generated. When I assign a workflow to a list, an email is sent. BUT when I create a Task List, Issue Tracking List or Project Tasks List, change the Advanced Settings and set that an assigned owner should get an e-mail, this email will never arrive....?? I checked the Timer Jobs, accounts which are used, security settings on my lists, did a telnet on port 25 to see wether my Exchange server is listening, update the alerttemplates.xml, SMTP relay settings, checked the property values and did all this on both my servers but still no email when assigning a task. I also checked the SQL server tables, did all the STSADM commands I have found on about 40 different sites and I have searched for a solution on this for about 2 weeks now. I created a new Web Application, new site collection(s), new sites (different templates), used SharePoint Designer and SharePoint manager 2007 to check settings, tried every solution I could find on all kinds of sites but without result. NO EMAIL IS SENT OR ARRIVES WHEN ASSIGNING AN OWNER AND SET THAT THIS SHOULD GENERATE AN EMAIL WHEN CREATING A NEW TASK, ISSUE TRACKING LIST OR PROJECT TASK LIST Please give me another/new solution and please do not delete this question because there's no solution which was succesfull right now Best regards, Jan Gremmen

There is a simple rule. Never post the same question twice. In this case you posted this new thread AND added the same question to an existing thread. That's one too many - parallel threads waste forum members' time. I have therefore deleted that reply in the other thread. Moderator I don't know why your earlier issue was deleted - if it was - but if you had tried too hard (Total use of CAPS; PLEASE HELP; exclamations marks etc. in the Title) to attract people to it that might be one reason for it vanishing.SP 2010 "FAQ" (mainly useful links): http://wssv4faq.mindsharp.com/default.aspx WSS3/MOSS FAQ (FAQ and Links) http://wssv3faq.mindsharp.com/default.aspx Both also have links to extensive book lists and to (free) on-line chapters

Hi, I would suggest you these steps: 1. Try the same from all WFE to verify if there is any issue with a WFE. 2. Check allow relay list of your SMTP server whether it has all IPs of your all WFEs in it or not. I hope this will help you out. Thanks, Rahul Rashu

Jan, I am shooting in the dark since I do not have any access to your site. If the versioning is not turned on, you may try turning it on and testing this again. Again this is a shot in the dark but if it works your pain point goes away. Secondly what triggers the notifications that you want sent to the assigned owner? Bazin Makonnen

There are only two servers involved and i have chekced settings and ran the actions on both machines. SMTP is allowed for all internal servers. If SMTP was the problem, the probably the other mail (Welcome mail when adding a new user - Workflow e-mail etc) wouldnt work as well but this IS working. I don't know what to check anymore... Jan

Hello Bazin, The only thing I would like to realize is sending an e-mail to someone who is assigned to be the owner of a Task of an Issuel List or a Project Task. By default (at least thats what I expect) SharePoint 2007 can do this OOTB. For some reason this is not working in the environment I am working at and unfortunately all efforts I did to make it work don't solve the issue. Versioning is not turned on but i am wondering if this would make a difference. Jan

Jan, As you stated, I think the SMPT issue can be ruled out by virtue that other emails are being generated. What is entirely not clear to me is how the OOTB list item is generating the notification automatically. Have you turned on the built in workflow feature for the particular list and automated it to notify the assignee? You may need to turn on the workflow feature in the list or library. I guess I am not clear on how the ootb automatically generates the email without some form of trigger to kick the job off. Bazin Makonnen

Hi Bazin, Correct me if I'm wrong but when I use a Task List in SharePoint 2007 and change the settings of the list and open the Advanced Settings of the list, then there's an option : E-Mail Notification Send e-mail when ownership is assigned When I select: Yes (send an e-mail when ownership is assigned) then to me this sounds like an e-mail gets generated automatically when I add a new task and assign it to one of my colleagues out og the box. This is SharePoint behaviour which I have tested on other environments for which I do not have to define additional things/actions. Best regards and thanks for your efforts to help me solve this Jan
