What is the limit for the list item per custom lists in moss 2007
Hi Peng, The Guideline document you provided is mentioning list item per view but it is not giving any limits to store items in custom lists. Does it means that there is no limit to store items in customs lists but there is limits to view the number of items(2000) of the custom list?

As per Microsoft’s recommendation 2000 item per lists in MOSS 2007 but not sure 2000 item for custom view or over all items in custom lists. But if it is limit for custom lists items then we have several lists which has more than 10,000 records in our Moss 2007 and we never get any performance issue. We are compiling SharePoint governance for MOSS 2007. We really need expert view on this matter.

If you get over 2000, it can have performance issues. You can see performance issues if you try to use filters or queries to fetch the items. if you are only displaying all items in all ists without any views, you may not see it up front however you may see performance issue when you navigate between pages on a list. Why performance issues occur, here is the detail, SharePoint does not have any indexing mechanism on columns. all coumns are stored in database without any index etc. so database can slow down if you start hitting alot of queries of filters to the list etc. Performance issues further show up when you have a lot of user requests coming in and user base is also large etc. Moonis Tahir MVP, MCPD, MCSD.net, MCTS BizTalk 2006/SQL 2005/SharePoint Server 2007 (Dev & Config)

Can indexed column from custom lists setting solve the performance problem over 2000 item in MOSS 2007. I also found other link in practical scenario saying item capacity can be up to 100,000. http://sharepointony.info/2009/06/09/moss-2007-size-limits-and-list-item-attachments/

Hi PriteshPatel357, You can refer to the following article, and focus on reading the part of “Guidelines for acceptable performance”. Test indicates a reduction in performance beyond two thousand items. Using indexing on a flat folder view can improve performance: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc262787(office.12).aspx. 2000 is the recommendation number of the items per view. In the software boundaries of SharePoint 2007, some are hard limits, and some are tested or supported limits. The limit of items belongs to the latter. It means that if you exceed the range of small, you will not notice significant changes. Thanks & Regards, Peng Lei
