SQL should be installed first if you want to use a full version of SQL rather than express. NOTE: this is only possible if you do a full/complete install. A standalone install will automatically install SQL Express even if SQL is already installed.IIS and .net Framework will be installed by the SharePoint 2010 prerequisites installer so you don't need to install them separately. run the prerequisites installer from the SharePoint DVD next. You don't need to install both WSS and MOSS. A MOSS installation will automatically install everything in WSS. this should be done after the prerequisites installer finishes.Visual Studio 2008 and SharePoint Designer 2007 would be last. You can install them in either order.
Here's an article on how to install SharePoint 2007 (MOSS)

1) I suspect you did a standalone install. When you do that it does automatically run the PSConfig wizard and doesn't ask you for database server name or port number. In a standalone install all that is hard coded to make it easier to do the
install. It doesn't ask for the SQL server since it automatically installs and uses SQL Express. AS I mentioned in my answer you have to do a Full/Complete install to be supply the SQL server name.
2) For VS did you open the .sln file or the .prj file? YOu need to use the .sln file and you only get a .wsp solution if you used one of the SharePoint specific project templates to create the VS solution originally.Paul Stork SharePoint Server

SQL Express has a different version of SQL Management Studio and it doesn't get installed by default. Here's where you can download SQL Express management studio so you can install it.
How was the original .SLN created? If you didn't use one of the SharePoint Specific templates in VS 2010 then it will be a regular VS project and won't have a .WSP solution to add things to.Paul Stork SharePoint Server
