Web Application and attached site collections not launching
Hi all,
I've been given a Virtual Machine running a SharePoint 2007 environment. The server build is SP2 and the SharePoint 2007 instance is fully patched and is an enterprise license. The set up is for training purposes but I believe it's been
handed over in an incomplete state. I've got three applications: -
http://moss.denallix.com (training application)
http://blackpearl:36846 (SSP)
http://blackpoint:15830 (Central Administration)
Of the three links, I can't access the first two links. I'm not getting a 403, 404 or specific protocol error message but just a page cannot
bne rendered message.
Can anyone suggest anything at all? I've had a look through the SP settings and it all seems fine.
Many thanks,
Steven

Have you tried checking IIS (run inetmgr) to see if those web sites are running?

Since you've got access to Central Administration the first thing to do is to go to the Application management tab and check the list of site collections for each web application. If you have a web application created without a site collection then
you won't be able to open the website.
However, its more likely that you just don't have permission to access the sites or the DNS resolution isn't working. Again in Central Admin check to see who is the site collection administrator for each site collection. The easiest way to gain
access to the site would be to add yourself as the primary or secondary site collection admin.

IIS is running perfectly fine. I've rest both this and the VM but to no avail.
Initially the main application on my opening URL has no site collection to it, so one was created and permissions accordingly. It created with no problem but upon attempting to access the site on the created URL, I was denied entry. The access
request isn't even getting to SharePoint.
A good call on the DNS settings, I'd forgotten about that. I'll redirect internally if needed and will advise if this works.http://www.final-exodus.net

My perhaps simplistic take on this is that blackpoint is the name of the server which is why the third one is working.
The first step would be to amend AAM (Alternate Access Metod) in CA so that you also have working references in SP to both
moss.denallix.com and
blackpearl
This as has already been stated will need DNS changes because otherwise the user won't get as far as the server for AAM to do its magic

Right, AAM looked fine to me, so I had a play around with the Hosts, subbed the location for 127.0.0.1 in for my application and it worked. Broke the network inheritance on the VM, assigned an internal IP and it worked fine.
Cheers for your help all.http://www.final-exodus.net
