I have created a web application http:spserver:1414 and a site collection in it. but when i try to open it the browser displays The page cannot be displayed.

what is the url u r typing in the browser? It should also include the site name in it. for eg. http://spserver:1414/sites/<site-name>

No i did not get the solution.

Check the ULS Logs (C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\12\LOGS) and provide some detailed information.

when you go to the section where you can add content db from the UI, you can see your web application and the linked Database name. Besides that there is a column which shows how many site collections are present. Can you tell whats the no.? If its zero, which means you have just created a web application and nothing else for which you are not getting any page.

If thats the case (as mentioned by ssm225in) then you should create a site collection in your web-application and then access it.
