We installed KB976323 and now Sharepoint 2007 document libraries cannot receive incoming email. We installed KB976323 and it resets the SMTP settings on the incoming Sharepoint 2007 frontend Windows SMTP email server so we put the previous settings back in but SharePoint still does not appear to see/recognize it. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;976323 The problem is that when we go to http://sharepointserver:8888/_admin/IncomingEmail.aspx and try to configure the Section “Safe E-Mail server” and choose “Accept mail from these safe e-mail servers” the section “Safe E-Mail server” is no longer there. Here is a sample of what the IncomingEmail.aspx page looks like from another site. http://anurasoftware.com/SPIncomingEmailSettings.aspx This is what allows SharePoint to accept email from other “safe” email servers and route it in to the Sharepoint document library. We are thinking that maybe Sharepoint has to reregister with SMTP somehow because it is like SharePoint is not seeing the SMTP server so it does not provide the section/list for Safe E-mail Servers so we cannot add them in. It appears that other people are experiencing SMTP settings getting reset also. We are thinking we may want to uninstall KB976323 and see if that resolves it but we would prefer not to due to security concerns. References: Security Update for Windows Server 2008 x64 Edition (KB976323) http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;976323 After you install this security update on a Windows Server 2008-based system that has Internet Information Services (IIS) installed, the SMTP configuration options are reset. Any SMTP configuration options that were set before you install this update are lost. Any SMTP configuration options that are needed must be manually reapplied after you install this security update. http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/windowssecurity/thread/c87f4186-8842-4f50-b73c-d99e93a9f53c The issue was caused by the SMTP service settings being reset... We put them back now and everything works again but we are slightly worried that this might happen again! The only solution I could find after spending hours on it was to uninstall KB976323. That immediately fixed the problem. It's pretty poor that such a basic function in the SMTP server -- ie sending mail, which is what the SMTP server is for! -- could be broken by this security update. Clearly it wasn't tested.

Why don't you manually add the name of the server in the Accept mail from these safe e-mail servers: section, and see if you mail configured document library is able to receive emails. -Mukesh

Hi Mukesh, Thank you for helping on this. The entire section “Safe E-Mail Servers” is no longer there so we cannot choose “Accept mail from these safe e-mail servers:” under it. Here is a sample of how it is supposed to look. http://anurasoftware.com/SPIncomingEmailSettings.aspx For some reason that particular dialog box/section is missing now. That setting is gone and we are not sure why. Was this moved to another location somewhere else or is it still supposed to be there? Maybe the form for this page got messed up somehow and needs to reset/reregistered. Thanks, Jay jm
