Hi,seemingly Windows SteadyState is installed in the form of a Service Pack to Windows XP. An alternate uninstall route therefore is to go to the hidden system folder C:\WINDOWS\$NtUninstallSCT$\spuninst and double click on the spuninst.exe file there. To remove any temporary files left in that folder after uninstallation, simply reboot the machine: they will be removed automatically. If you can't seem to find this folder, open My Computer and in the Tools Menu choose Folder Options. Under tab View in the Advanced Settings box under the Files and Folders section, select option Display the contents of system folders and in the subsection Hidden files and folders, select option Show hidden files and folders. This will make all files and folders visible.HTH.Jan J.

What Jan said is right on the target. For each application listed in the Add/Remove Programs, there is a registry key in the following registry: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\] For SteadyState, it has a registry key [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\Windows SteadyState]. If this key is missing, the Windows SteadyState entry will not be displayed in Add/Remove Programs. The UninstallString registry value contains the command line to be executed when an uninstall operation is invoked from Add/Remove Programs. For SteadyState, it is C:\WINDOWS\$NtUninstallSCT$\spuninst\spuninst.exe. Now that the entry is missing in Add/Remove programs, we can run the command line manually to uninstall this tool. If you have enabled Windows Disk Protection, please ensure that you turn it off before running the command line.

Hi Sylink, I would like to confirm if SteadyState is still within "Add/Remove Programs" or still accessible. We can check if most files under the following folder have been deleted. If so, SteadyState should have been uninstalled. C:\Program Files\Windows SteadyState If it's just the uninstall link under Add/Remove Programs, Sammy's suggestion will remove the link without issue. If SteadyState is still accessible, since the $NtUninstallSCT$ folder has been deleted, command line removal will not be available. We can reinstall SteadyState and then try to uninstall it again. You may need to delete the following registry branch before reinstalling SteadyState. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Computer Toolkit Best Regards,

Hi Shawn, Unfortunately that won't work, as SteadyState reports it's already been installed. @Sylink The only way around this is to get hold of another installation's $NtUninstallSCT$ folder and its contents, along with $NtUninstallWDF01005$ to remove WDF. You'll need to uninstall WDF first You can simply copy these two dirs from any other SteadyState installation, direct onto a USB flash drive if you like, and runtheSPUNINST EXE's directly from each of the folders. It works without fail. It's how I worked out how getaround the WDF bug with defraggers (you have to SPUNINST WDF after any 3rd party app defrag) Unfortunately I cannot attach a ZIP with them in - even though its only 500KB Hope that this helps Cheers Steve

Hi Steve, Thank you very much for your sharing and suggestions. In my tests, if I delete the following registry key, SteadyState can be reinstalled without issue. Of course, we have to turn off WDP first. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Computer Toolkit Regards,

I'm having similar major trouble with a machine that seemingly had Windows SteadyState installed. The trouble is... I want to remove it, but I'm running into problems.1st - SteadyState doesn't seem to be installed properly - when I click on the SS icon, it gives me the error "repair or reinstall the application"So, I went to MS download site and redownloaded the newer version.2nd - tried to run the new Installer.. and get the error "Another version is already installed... use Add/Remove to remove the older version"So, I go to Add/Remove and click Remove and get "Cannot be uninstalled... please disable Windows Disk Protection and then try again."How can I disable Windows Disk Protection if the SteadyState software doesn't run?I tried going to Services and disabled SteadyState.. then rebooted, and got locked up at the LoginPrompt which wouldn't let me log in saying "waiting for SteadyState to Initialize".. it never goes beyond that.. so I have to reboot and try the loop again.I want to remove the WHOLE SteadyState software.. but I can't get past this! Please HELP!!!Is there a way to uninstall SteadyState manually?

You need to choose the Repair option and try to repair the installation. Then you should be able to launch the program and turn off Disk protection, and then go to ADD/REMOVE to uninstall the programJealousy is not proof of love, nor proof of emotional immaturity

Iwas having exactly the same problem. Apparently it started because SteadyState files got corrupted when removing a virus and spyware. Then it got worse because I removed all the references to it from the Registry (following a removal suggestion), asthe "Repair" option wouldn't show in "Add and Remove Programs" or anywhere else that I know, and reinstalled it.After this first reinstall, I received the message that the program wasn't installed correctly. I followed a second set of removal instructions (see below) andI was able to reinstall it, but then it got me back to whereI started: it doesn't allow me to set WDP to "on". Ireimaged the PC today to fix the problem (didn't test yet), but there must be a way to remove the program's files completely and reinstall it correctly...I'm quoting the removal instructions that workedfrom http://social.microsoft.com/forums/en-US/windowssteadystate/thread/44babeb8-8d62-4733-8f8a-c46f74459706, with some notes: "1. Restart your computer and start pressing the F8 key on your keyboard. On a computer that is configured for booting to multiple Operating Systems, you can press the F8 key when you see the boot menu. 2. When the Windows Advanced Options menu appears, select Safe Mode, and then press Enter. 3. Log onto Windows by using the Administrator account or any user account with the Administrator privileges. 4. Delete the Cache.wdp file under drive C. If the cache file cannot be found, lets show hidden files with the following steps. ----------------------- 1. Open drive C: Click Organize menu-> Folders and search option. [Note: for XP, this would be Tools > Folder Options] 2. Click the View tab. Under Hidden files and folders, click "Show hidden files and folders." 3. To display other hidden files, clear the "Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)" check box. 4. Click the "Hide extensions for known file types". [Note: Unclick?] 5. Click OK. After that, delete related registry keys and files ----------------------- 1. Click Start and then Run. 2. Type in regedit and then click OK. 3. Navigate and delete the following two branches: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Computer Toolkit HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\Windows SteadyState 4. Search and delete all Windows SteadyState related entries. [Note: I found mentions to legacy SteadyState entries that weren't possible to delete] 5. Delete files under C:\Program Files\Windows SteadyState"
