WSUS patches Installing during ConfigMgr OSD task sequence causing software installations in the task sequence to fail
I have been troubleshooting an issue where a freshly imaged computer failed to install software during the task sequence. This is only on occasion, and a majority of the time all applications install properly. Here is the scenario: SCCM SP2 R2 Environment. Hierarchy - 3 Tiers. 1 Parent Primary, 3 Child Primaries, 194 Secondary. OSD - XP Image installed via SCCM OSD. A standard MDT task sequence is used to install computers at all sites. There is a collection for each site that contains a set variables to customize the installation. Task sequence includes several applications that are listed directly in the task sequence, and a few that come from collection variables using the PACKAGESxxx variable (Using MDT 2010 Update 1 Integration). WSUS - configured separately. Settings are applied via GPO (Still working on management to integrate into SCCM). Patches are installed automatically at a specific time each day, and the user is prompted to restart if required. Additional info – there is a DP and WSUS downstream server on each of the 194 sites. Issue – Occasionally, a computer installation will complete, but some of the software will not be installed. Troubleshooting so far - I checked the smsts logs, and all packages were in fact available on the local distribution point. Further down in the log, I see an application installation error: Install Dynamic software action failed to install packageID: 'xxxxxxxx', programID: 'Per-system unattended'. Error Code 0x80070652 Error code translates to "Another installation is already in progress. Complete that installation before proceeding with this install. Source: Windows” I checked the Application Event logs and I can see during the time of the error, patches are installing. Referring back to my WSUS GPO, it is scheduled to install patches at this time... GO figure :) Does anyone have a suggestion on how to stop the WSUS patching until after the Task Sequence is completed? Again, this is not happening every time, but when the imaging process happens during the scheduled time for patching, it becomes an issue. I was thinking of adding a task to stop the wuauserv service? Maybe there is a way to tell it to override the GPO for a while and not check for, or install patches? I figure others may have seen this issue before, and I may have missed the solution due to bad key word search in the forums. Sorry if this is already answered. Any suggestions would be very welcome!
