WSUS WID or DB?

I have looked for official information, but cannot find it. Is WSUS WID database supported with SCCM 2012 R2?

Is the SQL database prefered, even if the WID database can be used?

Thanks in advance.

You can use the Windows Internal Database but you'll find that most ConfigMgr Admins will use SQL (you have it anyway).

Clarification: You can use it for WSUS to configure a ConfigMgr software updates solution (I'm assuming that's what you meant). You can't install ConfigMgr using it. That is not supp

Just another +1 from me and a qq: Why would you use WID if you have a SQL instance available? That would mean you have two separate DB instances each with their own overhead.

Just another agreement from me. . .I use SQL for the WSUS DB in all implementations.

I didn't seem to get an email to say I had any replies. Thanks guys.

Well, we have an airgapped environment (no internet), so I need an additional server elsewhere with WSUS running to download the updates.

I guess I could use the additional server with SCCM and WSUS - but that would be an extra System Center license. Alternatively pay for SQL on the internet connected WSUS server...either solution would cost more money though.

FYI there is no cost for deploying additional ConfigMgr Site Systems. ConfigMgr licenses are client based (ie Operating Systems that you manage). There is different cost for server OS and desktop OS.

You can read about this here

Also, SQL licensing is included as long as you just use the instance for System Center databases.

For just an Internet facing WSUS instance to download the update metadata, there's no reason to use anything but the WID. That really has nothing to do with your ConfigMgr infrastructure though and is basically just a download repository that you will export from.
