WSUS 3.0 questions, installation problems
Hope this is the right forum for this, but I'm trying to install Windows Server Update Services 3.0 on my Windows Server 2008 (aka Longhorn Beta 3) server. I'm trying to do a full install, but when I get to the Database Options page, the only option I can select is "Using an existing databse server on a remote computer (Machinename\Instancename). The two other options (Install Windows Internal Database on this computer) and (Use an existing database server on this computer) are grayed out. I can understand the second one being unavailable as I don't have SQL installed on this machine, but everything I've read leads me to believe that the first option (Install WID) should be selectable. Any ideas why it's not? My other question stems from something I read on this page: http://technet2.microsoft.com/windowsserver/en/library/3a8c83c3-4eac-4cc3-86fc-a54e67de9c121033.mspx?mfr=true I don't have a applicationhost.config file in %WINDIR%\system32\inetsrv\. Should I be alarmed? Configuring IIS 7.0 After installing IIS 7.0 on Windows Server2008, you will need to update the IIS configuration file. 1. Open the IIS configuration file: %WINDIR%\system32\inetsrv\applicationhost.config 2. In the <system.webServer><modules> tag, remove <add name="CustomErrorModule">, if it is present. 3. In the <system.webServer><modules> tag, add <remove name="CustomErrorModule">.

Hello aaronc, you may want to try the WSUS newsgroups. http://www.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/en-us/default.aspx?dg=microsoft.public.windowsupdate&cat=en_US_56d1dd45-de9e-4fc5-9bc1-2d1d0de6daee&lang=en&cr=US Thanks, Justin

I was able to resolve the issue by doing the following.... 1. Uninstall Database engine (SQL for WSUS) from Add/Remove Programs (sorry, I can't remember the real name) 2. Re-run the 2.0 setup, which allows you to uninstall the product. 3. Re-run the 3.0 setup, which completes and allows you to run the setup wizard. I'm not sure if this is a fluke, but it did work on two of my replica servers.

This didn't work for me. When I try to do this, it goes through the options to remove everything. When it gives me the notification that it's going to remove the database engine also, I hit Next and it goes to the "Wizard Not Completed!" with the message: The Microsoft Windows Server Update Services was not removed successfully because an error occurred. I had WSUS 2.0 (with a service pack or 2, can't remember now). I tried to upgrade the installation with WSUS 3.0. The upgrade failed and now I'm stuck in limbo with it. When I try to uninstall "Microsoft Windows Server Update Services Service Pack 1" from the Add/Remove Programs list, I get: Box Title: Windows Server Update Services 3.0 Box Message: Command-line Parameters Not Valid. See log file C:\DOCUME~1\....\WSUSSetup.log for details The WSUSSetup.log file reads as follows: 2007-10-22 16:25:14 Error MWUSSetup DoInstall: ParseCommandLine failed (Error 0x80041453)2007-10-22 16:35:22 Error MWUSSetup Wsus 2.0 is installed. The only possible setup action is upgrade (Error 0x80041453) When I try to run the WSUS 3.0 installation, I get the following: Setup Not Completed! Windows Server Update Services 3.0 could not be installed. For more information, see the Setup log "C:\DOCUME~1\....\WSUSSetup.log". The WSUSSetup.log file now reads as follows: 2007-10-22 16:25:14 Error MWUSSetup DoInstall: ParseCommandLine failed (Error 0x80041453)2007-10-22 16:35:22 Error MWUSSetup Wsus 2.0 is installed. Hi Guys ,You should try to read the log file named WSUSCa.xxxx.xxxx.log that is generated by WSUS installation package the location of this file is:C:\DOCUME~1\....\Temp\WSUSCa.00000.0000.logThis file explain with details the problem through the installation process and you can verify your system's configuration. The others log files only show the Error number instead of the explanation ...C:\DOCUME~1\....\Temp\WSUSSetup.logC:\DOCUME~1\....\Temp\WSUSSetupmsi_0000_000.logCesar LopezSystems AdministratorUniversidad de Guadalajara
