Hi All,I have sharepoint document library called "abc" and contains different types documents like excel, word doc, html, xml and pdf etc.Now when I click on the link of word or excel type document and the document is opened with compatible application. I edit the document without any error and save it to back again my document library named "abc".but problem is when I go to edit files like pdf, html or xml it will throw an error message i.e. "The document could not be opened for editing. A windows SharePoint services compatible application could not be found to edit the document."I understood there is no compatible application and thats why it gives such errors. Can anyone guide me or show me the way how to overcome/solve the problem? How to integrate required editor (XML,HTML and pdf) with SharePoint? What are the compatible application for XML, HTML or pdf editor like office for Word, excel? Please guide me...THanks! Hi there,Have you tried this article - I had this issue and applied the fix on this page and it worked for me:http://support.microsoft.com/kb/832809For us, there was no association for PDFs on our sharepoint instanceSpecifically, the key segment is we had to modify is here:SharepointInstallDriveLetter:\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server\extensions\12\TEMPLATE\XML\DOCICON.XMLIn the ByExtension section you can add a element. For example, the following for acrobat pdf's:<Mapping Key="pdf" Value="pdf16.gif" EditText="Adobe Acrobat" />Hope this helpsGeoff

Hi Geoff,Even I have same issue but the difference is problem with WORD document. When I try to edit the doc file in sharepoint library throwing error "WSS could not found compatible application to Edit Document". And not able to create the doc file , throwing following error The document could not be created. The required application may not be installed properly, or the template for this Document Library cannot be opened. Please try the following: Check the General Settings for this Document Library for the name of the template, and install the application necessary for opening the template. If the application was set to install on first use, run the application and then try creating a new document again. If you have permission to modify this Document Library, go to General Settings for the library and configure a new template. Please Advise............Thanks Regards

Hi there, Sorry - this is a new thread isn't it? Just stumbled back on it. You have not mentioned whether you are using Office 2003 or 2007. Anyway, you could take a look at this and see if it helps? http://support.microsoft.com/kb/833714 or To resolve this issue, un-install the Office 2003 SharePoint Support, and then re-install it. Click Start, and then click Control Panel. Click Add or Remove Programs. In the list of currently installed programs, click Microsoft Office 2003, and then click Change. Click Add or Remove Features, and then click Next. Click to select the Choose advanced customization of application check box, and then click Next. In the Choose update options for applications and tools box, expand Office Tools, click the down arrow next to Windows SharePoint Services Support, and then click Not Available. Click Update. After the update is done, repeat the steps from #1 to #5. In the Choose update options for applications and tools box, expand Office Tools, click the down arrow next to Windows SharePoint Services Support, and then click Run from My Computer. Click Update again. For Office 2007, you can try the same way but choose Office 2007 suite in the Add or Remove Program panel. Or try to do the following: 1. Delete the owssupp.dll from C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12 2. Run Microsoft Office Tool –> Microsoft Office Diagnostic Hope this helps Geoff

I have had this problem come up at 2 of my 20 locations utilizing SharePoint. I thought that this would be the answer to my problem, but when applying the fix noticed I was running Office 2000. This did not give me the options outlined in the directions for Office 2003. These two locations worked fine in the past, but recently encountered the "compatible application" error. Do you know if a recently installed MS update could have changed my situation? Thanks!
