WSS 3.0 prompting me to login repeatedly, some images won't load
As of the last couple of days, my local dev WSS3 has been prompting me over and over again to login. Then some images won't load at all. Images like Site Actions menu backgrounds, bullets in my Links list, etc. But the primary images of the theme load.
I am logged in as a domain admin, and a site coll admin. I checked the permissions on the missing images and I have permission to it. I can browse to the missing image in WIndows Explorer and it works fine.
I recently installed 2 windows updates regarding an update for .net 3.5 sp1. I have uninstalled these updates and it's still happening. This has happened for quite some time but over the last day or two if I reload my page I get prompted 10-20 times to login.
Also, when it gets really good, if I click on a link to view an item i get prompted 3 times then i get a blank white page. I have to close IE and run IISRESET to get it back, and that is only for a few minutes.
I'm running WSS3 on Win2k8 R2 64bit
THanks,
David Lozzi

Have you tried rerunning the configuration wizard? I'm wondering if somehow (.NET security update?) your pool or farm service accounts have lost permissions to some files in the 12 hive or the registry - either the wizard or psconfig can help rebuild
those if that's the case.Chris McNulty MCSE/MCTS/MSA/MVTS http://www.kma-llc.net | blog http://blogs.kma-llc.net/microknowledge | twitter @cmcnulty2000

Is the URL of your SP Site within your trusted IR locations? Are you using Windows Authentication (if so you shouldn't have to login to your site on page load).Regards, Aaron www.aaron-rendell.co.uk

Hi David,
I think you are on the right track in thinking that this may be a permissions issue.
Have you tried running process monitor to confirm whether or not this is an NTFS (file system) permissions problem?
I find that this is a useful first step in resolving these types of issues - I hope it helps in this case.Benjamin Athawes - Twitter: @benjaminathawes - Blog: http://mossblogger.blogspot.com - Email: mail at bathawes.com

Hi Aaron, it's the simple things that elude me... yeah so far so good, that's working great. Thanks
Hi Benjamin, can you point me to some details on how to check it out?
Thanks!David Lozzi

It's great that Aaron managed to solve your problem.
There are some great resources on process monitor online such as http://blogs.technet.com/b/askperf/archive/2007/06/01/troubleshooting-with-process-monitor.aspx.
I would certainly recommend you check out the tool as I find it very useful in troubleshooting - particularly if there is a file level permissions issue.Benjamin Athawes - Twitter: @benjaminathawes - Blog: http://mossblogger.blogspot.com - Email: mail at bathawes.com

Dear David,
have you try disable loopback feature on your server ? try it as the following:-
To set the DisableLoopbackCheck registry key, follow these steps:
Set the DisableStrictNameChecking registry entry to 1. For more information about how to do this, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
281308 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/281308/ )
Connecting to SMB share on a Windows 2000-based computer or a Windows Server 2003-based computer may not work with an alias name
Click Start , click Run , type regedit , and then click
OK . In Registry Editor, locate and then click the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa
Right-click Lsa , point to New , and then click
DWORD Value . Type DisableLoopbackCheck , and then press ENTER. Right-click DisableLoopbackCheck , and then click Modify .
In the Value data box, type 1 , and then click
OK . Quit Registry Editor, and then restart your computer.

Hi Ahmed, I already made this update, I thought I posted that but I don't see it anywhere.
Hi Ben, This tool is quite the tool. I'm not sure what I'm looking for in here. Will I see an error if there is a permissions issue?

PS. Dont know if this will help but I have run Process monitor and noted that the w3wp process is having issues:
Operation : Create File
Path : C:\inetpub\wwwroot\wss\virtualdirectories\80\_themes\cardinal\topnavselected.gif\web.config
Result : Path not found.
Looking at the file its trying to access im not surprised the path cant be found!
Any ideas why this would be happening? Im fairly new to SP/WSS but have been a web dev for 7 years now and have looked in IIS and cant even see a _themes dorectory /Virtual directory.. Should there be one?
Again any help appreciated!
Thanks

Hi David,
The reload helped me a lot. Things are running quite smoothly.
I'm not sure about the path not found issue, that is odd. Can you access your SP pages at all?David Lozzi

Hi,
Its a bit bizzare, the users are prompted for their login, each time this happens I can see these entries in rocess monitor, then after about 4-5 failures the page loads up but with a few missing images (normally background images)
The weird bit is that its only for certian users...
Im going to try a fresh install tommorow morning (Home now), Ill let you know how I get on.
Thanks for your reply!

If the issue is occurring for some users and not others it could be due to incorrect NTFS permissions on your images.
I normally run ProcMon while experiencing the issue, save the log and search for the term "denied".
It may be that you added (for example) an image to the 12 hive but forgot to inherit permissions from the parent folder - denying access to the file.Benjamin Athawes

Thanks for the input, I have tried procman and it is showing that some directories cannot be found, however the directories that it seems to be looking for cannot be right (Path : C:\inetpub\wwwroot\wss\virtualdirectories\80\_themes\cardinal\topnavselected.gif\web.config)
This is a fresh install of WSS (well its a month old) it did work for the first week or so then just stopped (for some users) without anyone changing it.
We have not added any images etc, so I dont think that its that (To rule it out I have resorted to granting EVERYONE full access to the 12 hive to see if that resolved the issue (It didnt).
I have also this morning uninstalled and re-installed WSS - no change.
Although i did notice that it kept config/data etc is there any way to COMPLETLY remove WSS and all associated data and then re-install it from scratch?
Thanks again for the help!

Interesting...
Dont know what the cause is but got this working, only for it to break again a few minutes later.
It would appear that any theme other than default causes this issue, desite the fact that the themes directory has EVERYONE -> full access...
Any ideas?
EDIT :
Also dont know if this will be of use, but just discovered that ALL clients who are having the issue are on windows XP (Various IE versions 6, 7 & 8) however all users on win 7 with IE8 all work fine.
With this knowlege I installed firefox and... It works, It prompts for the password once as you would expect and then just works.
So in my mind now its looking like this may be a client issue, but dont know why :
a. it worked for everyone then suddently stopped.
b. why it works on IE8 on Win7 but not IE8 on win XP
c. why it works in FF but not IE.
Getting seriosly frustrated with this now :/

Thought Id finish this off..
We did resolve this, we ended up having to get one of the infrastructure team to look at the server set up - turns out it was an issue with kerberos. Dont know why it exhibited the symptoms that it did, but its all done now.
Thanks everyone for the suggestions and pointers, they all helped during the trouble shooting!

David, thanks for the reply, I found the same issue on my end.
As a troubleshooting step I went to the local computer management and tried to add my spadmin account to the Administrators group. After I did and went back into the Administrators group all I saw was the SID for the account, not the user name. I went ahead
and removed my computer from the domain and then added it back in and it works great now.
Thanks all!David Lozzi
