WSS 3.0 Authentication without prefixing credentials with domain name
I saw there was a thread on this, but it was two years old. Apologies in advance if I was supposed to post there. Using WSS 3.0 with Integrated Authentication (NTLM). When browsing to the WSS site while logged on to a non-domain client using Internet Explorer 8 with authentication setting set for auto login within the Intranet Zone and the site added to Trusted Sites I'm prompted to enter credentials, as expected. I put in my AD user name and password and the challenge dialog returns with the local client name prefixed as the domain and I'm unable to log on without the proper domain name The previous posts I've read suggest that because i'm logged on to a non-domain client trying to access a domain resource, in this case the username/password, that I have to enter in the domain first. Well, when using Firefox or Safari on the same non-domain client I am able to enter in only my username and password and gain access to the site without using the domain name. Why would that be? You would think that if any browser had that capability it would be the MS one. Any help would be apperciated. Thanks!

I just downloaded and installed the latest version of Firefox, and I put the URL of a SharePoint site into the address bar (My client PC is in different domain from the SharePoint and the SharePoint server is a member server instead of a domain controller). The logon dialogue box prompt and I inputted “Administrator” in user name and the right password. Then, I see the SharePoint access denied page, it take the current user as “SharePointServerMachineName\Administrator” instead of “SharePointDomainName\Administrator” Gu Yuming TechNet Subscriber Support in forum If you have any feedback on our support, please contact tngfb@microsoft.com

Seems strange we are seeing different results. One difference from what you are doing is that the clients I tested this on were not part of any domain, just a workgroup. In theory it shouldn't make a difference, but there is something different. I will test this again, uninstalling firefox and reinstalling to see if the results are the same.

Here is a little bit more information: Client: Windows XP SP3 Browsers: Internet Explorer 8 / Firefox 3.6 Not part of any domain, but the DNS suffix is set to the domain that the sharepoint server is a member of I cleared out all the history/cookies in Firefox and then uninstalled it -- Rebooted Downloaded Firefox 3.6 and installed it I then opened up Internet Explorer 8, browsed to the sharepoint site. I was prompted for credentials and then put in the username/password only. The challenge dialog was retrned back to me as if my credentials couldn't be verified with the ClientName\User in the username box. I closed IE and opened up Firefox and browsed to the sharepoint site. I was prompted for crednetials and then put in the username/password only. I was successfully logged into the sharepoint site WITHOUT having to specify the domain name. Any thoughts?
