WSS 3.0 Access Denied after Restore.
I have been trying to restore a WSS 3.0 SP2 backup to a rebuilt server with the same name. Both servers were standalone and are not on a domain. I used Central Administration to do the backup and I am using Central Administration to do the restore. I was able to complete the restore successfully but when I try to access the site I get an Error - Access Denied message. I have tried restoring at various levels up to the farm level. I have tried to go to Site Collection Administrator but I get an Unknown Error there and I tried the "stsadm -o siteowner -url https://server -ownerlogin server\Administrator" command line but I get a "Object reference not set to an instance of an object." message. I saw mention in another post about the user not being admin but I am doing all this under the Local Administrator on the server. Any help would be appreciated

I would suggest you use the farm administrator account to access the site rather than using a local administrator. A farm administrator has additional rights in the database and at other SharePoint locations. Let me know if you still get the same error. Thanks, Dip Dip http://dzeee.net/sharepoint

The local admin is the farm admin. Looking at the Farm Administrators group I see BuiltIn\Administrators and the Server\Administrator account and that's it. Not sure who else I could try but that. Thanks Solag

I seems like I can't access the Site collection options under Application Management but I can access pretty much everything else in Central Admin. Solag

Looks like I got it working. I am pretty sure that the issue was that I was restoring to a server of the same name. I setup a VM with a temp server installed and restored it to it and attached the content db with the stsadm addcontentdb command and was then able to change my site admins and was able to access the site then. Going through the same steps on the server with the same name gave me an unknown error on the site admin link and an access denied on the site but with the server name change I was able to get it working. Thanks, Solag
