Ram -- Each SharePoint farm can only have one configuration database associated with it, regardless of how many servers are in the farm or whether the farm is running Windows SharePoint Services (WSS) v3 or Microsoft Office SharePoint Server (MOSS) 2007. That is a one to one relationship; the best way to think of it is that the configuration database is the farm, that database contains all of the settings and configurations that define your farm and its components within it. A SharePoint site collection cannot be broken across content databases, it and all of its lists, documents and subsites (known as "webs" in the SharePoint object model) must be wholly contained within a single content database. A content database can hold multiple site collections, and multiple content databases can be associated with a single web application, but site collections cannot use more than one content database. Content databases literally contain the "contents" of a SharePoint site collection. The documents uploaded into it, the lists created in it, the data stored in those lists, are all stored in the content database. The details of a farm's configuration, its web applications, and its site collections are all stored in the configuration database. The config DB is the central component of a SharePoint farm; it is the hub that the farm's content, its spokes if you will, radiate out from. There are also databases associated with some Shared Service Providers (SSPs), such as the Search database, but those are much more specialized according to the needs of each individual SSP.
