WSS3.0, Edit in DataSheet Read-Only Issue
System Config: WSS 3.0, XP, Office 2003 Pro, Admin right on SP SiteIssue:When in Edit in Data Sheet Mode for list , the Entire View is Read-Only, we havebeen havingthis issue forthe last one month.THe way we tackled it was edit in MS Access which worked fine until the users got pissed off about it.Is there a way around for this, since these are highly validated systems so i can't use the "regedit method".I tried creating aview with only the required columns still no good.Itried to set the content approval to both yes and no still no avail.tried repair office and also uninstalled office and installed office dint work, both on my machine and on the test box.Any Other suggestions would be appreciatedThanks

Doesn't seem to be a Programming question.Moving to Admin.WSS FAQ sites: WSS 2.0: http://wssv2faq.mindsharp.com WSS 3.0 and MOSS 2007: http://wssv3faq.mindsharp.com Total list of WSS 3.0 and MOSS 2007 Books (including foreign language titles) http://wssv3faq.mindsharp.com/Lists/v3%20WSS%20FAQ/V%20Books.aspx

Where I seem to run into this is trying to use edit in datasheet mode with a document library, or a document library where I've once had content approval turned on.I do NOT run into this issue with a standard list, only with document libraries.I haven't bothered messing with it really, but I suspect there's a hanging chad with the content approval flag still being turned on, or an excel flag being turned off.this is the list that comes up when you click on 'Read Only' Status bar displays 'Read-only' or 'This view is read-only' The selected cell, column, row, or the entire view is read-only. You cannot edit a cell, column, or row that is marked read-only. If the entire view is read-only, you cannot edit any portion of the view. Portions of a view, or an entire view, might be read-only due to one or more of the following reasons: Certain columns, such as Created By and Modified, are always read-only. Values for these columns are entered automatically. The changes you made to the selected row or column have been submitted to the server. If there is no conflict or error, you will be able to edit the row or column after the changes have been saved. There is an unresolved conflict or error in the selected row or column. Resolve the conflict or error before attempting to edit the selected row or column. The list is set up to require content approval, and you are viewing the list in the All Items view. In the My Submissions view of a list that requires content approval, the Approval Status and Comment column are read-only. Only a user with Manage Lists right can edit these two columns. Attachments are read-only in a list that requires content approval. You cannot view or edit attachments in any of the views. The document in the current row has been checked out by a user. You cannot edit the columns in the row until the user checks the document in. You do not have permission to edit the column or row. Contact the list author for more information. After toying around on my site some, it appears to be the 'Once had content approval turned on' that is causing the issue. You'll need to dig through the site properties to see if you can change that flag.Jack Burnish

I agree It dosent seem to be programming questionbut i thinkthe only way the issue could be solved is through PROGRAMMING not through any admin settingsor designer work products.

That is exactly the problem it does'nt occur in the lists section but only in document library. What is worse in my scenario i never had "Content approval turned on" for my site ,anticipating this problem but still the problem persists, i worked out the help scenarios but dosent seem to work, the only way i can do it is to connect it through access and enter the data. When you mention Site Properties is it through Site Actions--> Site Setting --> Site Administration Or some feature in Central Admin?Appreciate your help(i am somehow convinced it is BUG that creeped in, no wonder eh!!)....

I am facing the same problem with doc library. I have been playing with it since morning and finally it is working for me. I used the refresh option from the drop down on Action menu while in the datasheet view and for some reason it is working me.

Did you ever solve this issue - see my latest post : http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/sharepoint2010customization/thread/3e026c38-6a1a-43bb-8ccb-5b8a6e60a2f1 Bill Smith 250-386-9926

For me it was due to versioning settings. I turned off requiring content approval and requiring documents to be checked out for editing. After that, I highlighted a cell and added data even though the datasheet still said it was read-only. After refreshing the page, the read-only status went away.
