WDS Service Errors - Are they normal??
Hi, Pretty fresh install of SCCM 2007 R3 onto a single computer with SQL 2008 R2 CU8... Everything is working OK, but whenever I restart the machine or in particular the WDS service I get the following two messages: An error occurred while trying to initialize provider WdsImgSrv from C:\Windows\system32\WdsImgSrv.dll. Since this provider is not marked as critical, Windows Deployment Services server will continue. Error Information: 0xC1030104 Followed by: The description for Event ID 258 from source WDSIMGSRV cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer. If the event originated on another computer, the display information had to be saved with the event. The following information was included with the event: 0xC1030104 The first is a warning, but the second one is an error message? I have uninstalled and reinstalled the PXE service point and WDS services a few times and that has not resolved this, I have also tried removing the remote install folder and some files out of C:\Windows\Temp to try and fix this... I am wondering if the error is normal? Also when I launch the Windows Deployment Services MMC snap-in... it just shows a yellow triangle on the server... and then states it needs to be configured, is this correct?

Can you check PXEContol.log on your server for any errors? The WDS SnapIn shows that icon when the service is not configured, which should not be necessary in your case, unless you are running DHCP on the same box. Just leave that as is.Miguel Rodriguez

You can ignore that error message if WDS is not configured. WDS does not have to be configured (therefore the yellow exclamation mark) when it's used as a PXE service point.Torsten Meringer | http://www.mssccmfaq.de

Hi, Thanks for the replies... after posting my message I started having yet another look round the forums and found this? http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/configmgrosd/thread/15e1c649-fa12-4f0c-a687-0bde535d22ca Should I be doing this? (I am talking about the wdsutil commands in particular....), I know its a slightly different issue but it seems very similar... Basically it bugs me if I have this error that is not mentioned anywhere as being normal! I do not have a DHCP server on the same server and also PXEControl log shows no errors and also I can actually use PXE booting succesfully... its just an annoying warning which I am working hard to get rid of!

As that is a Microsoft recommendation taken from http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc726554(WS.10).aspx you might try it. Though I'm not sure it will completely remove your issue... Miguel Rodriguez
