W10 Enterprise 10.0.10240 Search/Desktop Search not working WDS install

We have a Campus agreement, and this version is what we have been given.

If I burn the ISO to DVD and install a vanilla install from it, everything is tickety-boo. When the wim file is uploaded to WDS however, desktop search does not work.

Now, before anyone suggests sfc, dism.exe /online /cleanup-image /scanhealth, dism.exe /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth, creating a new user or the powershell command Get-AppXPackage | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"} - this is a clean, vanilla install, with only one user account manually created at setup. No answer file, no customisations, nothing. Zip. And they make no difference in any case.

I have even tried running through setup and keeping all the US settings instead of UK.

In summary:

Clicking "Search the web and Windows" - nothing
Clicking Start and selecting "Search the web and Windows" - nothing
Clicking Start and selecting "Cortana" - nothing

Any working answer would be apprec

Hi Tom-at-Stirling,

Did the issue occur with all the machines installed with WDS(coincidence or certainty)? Are there any error messages recorded in the Event Viewer? Is the machine joined to the domain?

Sometimes I come across the similar issue and I resolved it by restarting the "Windows Explorer" process.

Best regards

1. Does yoour WDS work with other desktop operating systems?

2. I do recommend using network monitor to get response system

3. I understand that you do not want some suggestions, however Event log may reveal something.... What about logging of WDS?

4. If nothing helps you have some prepaid MS help (is it four, I hope) in Campus Agreement program.

Hi guys, thanks for the replies. WDS works impeccably with all other OS. This anomaly happens whether joined to the domain or not. I have also noticed that Cortana works around 9 out of 10 with DVD build, but not consistently. Search works fine with DVD build consistently.

The failure of search is restricted to WDS, there are no errors in any of the logfiles, or in event manager.
