Do you have visio software installed?

I guess this could be a problem associated with your default file type.

In your machine, right click on a visio file and then select the option to select the default open software. Point it to visio

I appreciate you taking the time to respond. Visio is installed. Visio is associated with the proper extensions and indeed opens if I double click a file on the local system. Things work properly on my laptop, just not the newly installed Windows 8.1 desktop.

Hi Daniel,

Do you mean that the visio files in local system could be opened well, however the visio files from SharePoint were opened in Word in Windows 8.1 desktop?

For narrowing down this issue, let's verify the followings:

  1. Whether this issue occurs for other type files like Word, Excel, ect.
  2. Whether this issue occurs on other Windows 8.1

Please make sure all add-ons related to SharePoint are enabled in IE options.

Please try to repair Office application under Control Panel. After finishing it, reboot your machine, then test again.

Best Regards,
