Virtualizing SharePoint 2007
Dear All, Out network team planning to virtualize SharePoint 2007 Server for better management of hardware. One web front we have which is already on virtual server. We had already virtualized database server (SQL Server 2005) Please would there be any issue doing this or anything i need to take care of. Host name, and IP of server will remain the same.-- Kind Regards Sandeep

Sandeep -- SharePoint 2007 is supported for use on virtual machines (at least for the major virtualization platforms: VMware, Hyper-V, Citrx), so it is fine to use it. The big thing you'll want to watch for is what kind of disk I/O you're going to get on your VMs, often times that's a performance metric that easily overlooked and can definitely impair virtual machines more easily than it can in physical hardware. Within SharePoint farms, your Web Front End servers virtualize best, because they are not disk intensive. Application servers are ok, although it depends on what you're doing in your farm's services or SSPs. Search servers have a harder time of it, because they are reading and writing to index files stored on their file system during a crawl, which can be disk I/O intensive. Worst of all is the SQL Server instance, because database platforms in general are heavy users of disk I/O. That's not to say you can't get good performance or good disk I/O in virtual machines or even SharePoint's search or database servers. I'm just saying that's what you'll want to keep an eye on for those roles, because that's where you're most likely to see a bottleneck. Also, do not expect that you'll be able to use VM snapshots as a disaster recovery approach for your farm. Microsoft does not support the use of VM snapshots as a DR solution unless all servers in the farm are completely turned off when the snapshots are taken. Hi John, Thanks for your reply. Just one thing i forgot to mention i have 8 core CPU and i have multiple AD Forest from where i import users to user profile(In Central admin) Would there be any issue virtualizing SharePoint 2007 SP2 to VMWARE with multiple domains. -- Kind Regards Sandeep

There shouldn't be any technical reason preventing that from working. Again, the biggest thing is to keep an eye on performance for your SharePoint server and your SQL Server and remember that disk I/O is now another metric you'll want to track. Depending on how your host server(s) is set up, you may also need to watch your network performance while that profile import runs to make sure that SharePoint can get the data it needs from your domains without any bottlenecks there also.
