hello yes - you can setup Sharepoint on virtual machine running on VMWare. Moreover most of our development environments are configured on VMWare because it is very convenient and fast way to copy environment for new team member. Also with VMWare you can use useful feature of snapshots: if something goes wrong you can always revert virtual machine to stable snapshot and continue development. It helped me several times and economy days of reconfiguring environment. That's why I prefer virtual env for Sharepoint developmentBlog - http://sadomovalex.blogspot.com CAML via C# - http://camlex.codeplex.com Graphs visualization in Sharepoint - http://spgraphviz.codeplex.com

All SharePoint products work well in VMWare environments such as VM Workstation. That includes some SharePoint products that do NOT work in Virtual PC. However that does not mean that MS officially support them. To answer that we need to know both which exact SharePoint product and which exact VMWare product2010 Books: SPF 2010; SPS 2010; SPD 2010; InfoPath 2010; Workflow etc. 2007 Books: WSS 3.0; MOSS 2007; SPD 2007; InfoPath 2007; PerformancePoint; SSRS; Workflow Both lists also include books in French; German; Spanish with even more languages in the 2007 list.

SharePoint is officially supported on any virtualization environment that has passed the Microsoft Server Virtualization Validation Program. You can find a list of approved products here: http://www.windowsservercatalog.com/results.aspx?&bCatID=1521&cpID=0&avc=0&ava=0&avq=0&OR=1&PGS=25 It does include VMWare.Paul Stork SharePoint Server MVP
