VMMS.EXE Strangeness?

Hyper-V 2012 R2. I had to delete some hyper-v VM's on 2 hyper-v servers. I google how to completely remove hyper-v vm and here is how i deleted the vm's:

  • delete vm from hyper-v manager
  • login to the hyper-v server and delete the virtual disk

So i need to recreate the vm's using the identical vm info. Like computer name and ip address. I also used the exact same name in hyper-v manager. Now, the 2 that i have recreated are doing odd things! Like windows updates, there will be 66 updates. I install those 66 updates and the download of these updates will not complete (stuck at 5% downloading). Then i restart the vm and try again, this time the download completes but the install gets to all 66 and then, instead of needing to reboot, the update client says "updates complete". Then if you "check for updates" all 66 still need to be updated. This oddity happens on both the vm's. Both the vm's also are performing poorly. These 2 vm's have the exact same specs as the ones i deleted with the exception of the new vm's are gen 2 and the old vm's were gen 1. Also, if i add physical drives to the vm, it will not start.

So, does the hyper-v server hold some info of the old vm's? Maybe i did not remove the old vm's completely somehow

I see here:

that for the most part answers my question (which was posted after i asked my original question).

In reading your description I would not attribute your issues to your deletion process nor to Hyper-V per se.

I would root your experience in the image you used to re-create your VMs.

Did you update the Integration Services in your new VMs to the latest (matching your host)?

Do you keep your root image patched?

The physical disks attached to a generation 2 VM not starting is an issue I have seen in another thread.  Again, I ask if the integration services in the VM have been updated.

Hi forgiven,

If you want to create the Generation 2 vm you need perform the fresh system install and it is not support to attach the syspreped system vhd image as boot image.
