I am very new to DPM and have configured a DPM 2012 server on a  physical server with an IBM Tape Library. The goal is to backup long term copy of a dedupe windows volume to the tape library. However, I have noticed that DPM is not optimizing the backup but instead copying the entire raw volume. I was hoping to get some clarification from someone for the below :

Does DPM support dedupe on tape library ?

Does DPM support dedupe on disks if it's configured on a dedicated physical machine with high volume storage attached to it?

I would appreciate your response on this.

Hi,

All DPM tape based backups for Windows deduped volumes have to be full file backups.  There would be no way to restore individual files / folders if the dedup data was simply copied to tape.

DPM does not support dedup on tape. Data can be compressed on tape for full backups.

One needs to understand that dedup on tape would make recovery complicated and may cause RTO to hit as dedup blocks can spiral across tapes.
