Users cannot browse for shared data sources for reports
Hi, In our TFS 2008 SP1 installation with Reporting Services 2005, we experience that users in projects cannot browse for shared data sources for their reports. Checking the security settings for the "Home" folder shows that "NT AUTHORITY\Authenticated Users" (as expected) has the "Browser" role assigned. The shared data sources TfsReportDS and TfsOlapReportDS are present in the folder (I can browse them with my "Content Manager" role) and security settings for the data sources are inherited from the parent folder (as expected) But when a user tries to browse for the data sources, all project folders are shown, but no datasources!? When entering the "Data sources" property on the reports in the team project, the error message "The shared data source reference is no longer valid" is shown after the browse button. That goes for all existing reports, but when executing the reports they are shown as expected. If a user tries to manually enter "\TfsReportDS" as the shared data source, the message "The permissions granted to user xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx are insufficient for performing this operation. (rsAccessDenied)". But shouldn't the "Browse" role be enough for this? To my knowledge nothing has been changed on the server, but I'm open for suggestions... Any help would be appreciated! Kind regards, Carsten-S

Hi Carsten-S, Actually, in the predefined roles, there are only "Content Manager","My Reports" and "Publisher" roles including "View Data Sources"/"Manage Data Sources" tasks who can see the shared datasource on the report manager. The "Browser" role has the following tasks: Task Description View reports Run a report and view report properties. View resources View resources and resource properties. View folders View folder contents and navigate the folder hierarchy. View models View models in the folder hierarchy, use models as data sources for a report, and run queries against the model to retrieve data. Manage individual subscriptions Create, view, modify, and delete user-owned subscriptions to reports and linked reports, and create schedules in support of those subscriptions. so, the users in the "Browser" roles can't see/use the datasources. You also can verify the tasks in each role via the following steps: 1. Open the report manager. 2. Click "Site Settings" in the right top corner on the report manager home page. 3. Under "Security", click "Configure item-level role definitions" hyperlink. 4. Then, click any predefined role to see its tasks. Also, if you want to minimise the permissions for the users, you can create a custom role including the "View Data Sources"/"Manage Data Sources" tasks for these users. See http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms156264.aspx for more information about customizing role definitions. thanks, Jerry
