User profile Synchronization - missing manager field

Hi,

I have setup and synchronized Sharepoint 2010 with AD.  All of the containers that I specified have been transferred along with a number of the user properties.  The problem is the Manager field is still blank in Sharepoint, even though it is populated in AD.  There is a user property in sharepoint for this and it is mapped to to and AD attribute called 'manager'.  The Policy setting for this property in sharepoint is set to "Optional" but greyed out so I cant change it to required.  I am not sure if that is the problem.  I cant delete it either to create a new one.  Has anyone else had this issue.  I need that manager field to be populated so the Organization in mysites can be generated.  Any advice would be appreciated.

If you search for the user in Active Profiles under Manager User Profiles do you see the manager there? Or are you simply looking at the my site for the user or doing a search for them. Maybe the data isnt syncing properly. You could check in Forefront to confirm the data is actually getting brought over from AD or you could check the various databases to see if the manager field is populated. However looking around in the DB is not supported by MS but if its not a production system it may help you figure things out.

The manager wasn't in the active profiles either.  Weird thing I saw was that the manager was there for some people.  I changed the profile connection doc to include less containers and then everything worked.  Manager now is populated and my organization is working in mysites.  Thanks for your reply DaFord.

Hi Asinghami,

I had the same scenario as that of you. Some of the users have Manager listed in their profile and some aren't. Could you please elaborate as what you mean by " changed the profile connection doc to include less containers" ? that would help me to populate Manager field for all the users in my organization.

Your help would be much appriciated!!

All,

I was able to get manager field listed for all the user profiles. The issue I had in my environment where some associates were not able to browse Organization chart becasue their Manager field is empty in their profile. After some research, noticed that their Managers are listed in other AD container(OU) which is unchecked in the Profile connection. I had to check that container(OU) as well followed by Full synchornization to get this issue fixed. All the users were able to browse thier Orgnization chart without any issue. Hope this would help someone who landed in the same issue.

Thanks!
