User opens doc Read-Only, but modification date is changed
SharePoint 2007:
I have two users that open a document from a SHarePoint library (different libraries); they open the document READ ONLY, but as soon as they open it in Word, the Modified date is changed, and Modified by value is changed, as if they have edited and saved
the document. This is causing a problem because it is initiating Workflows.
As a workaround, I asked them to use Mozilla FireFox or Google Chrome. This worked for a while (one user using Chrome), but the symptoms have started up again - the document is marked as modified by this user.
Any thoughts, suggestions, help is appreciated.
thanks,
Peter

What is your work flow doing? If the workflow is triggering something then SharePoint is working as expected. Kris Wagner, MVP, MCITP, MCTS Twitter @sharepointkris Blog: http://www.sharepointkris.com/blog

Hi Peter,
Have you checked the workflow as Kris suggested?
If only two users meet this issue, please also check they are Office product.
When a file open in read only mode, it download a copy in template folder and would not modify the original file.
The problem occurs when doc open in these two users’ Office clients. So I suggest you to repair there Office product to have a try.
Best regards. Emir

I am having the same issue, except it has nothing to do with Work Flows. It is actually only happening on our Citrix XenApp servers (which are provisioned) and not from a fat client. So the issue most likely has to do with Citrix, but I was
hoping someone could suggest a starting point for me to look into. Thanks.

We are having similiar issue on MOSS 2007; while file is opened in Read-only mode. More surprisingly "Modified By" field is changed; while "Created By" remains un-changed. Pls note that document library has versioning enabled and no new version is created;
instead "Modified By" is changed in the original version 1.0 itself.
Addtionally we are neither working on Citrix client nor using any workflow.
Appreciate response/resolution in this issue.

I am experiancing the exact same issue without Citrix, only occurs for some users.
Anyone figured this out yet?

Not sure what the cause was, but we discovered it only did it when SP was accessed by the NetBIOS name. When users went to the FQDN everything worked fine.

Thanks for responding. Sadly we are already accessing with FQDN. Time to keep digging I guess :)

Hello,
Can you all tell me what Virus Scan software you are using on your client machines and on SharePoint if there is one?

We are using McAfee as AV on client and SP server machines. This behaviour continues.

Deepak your issue is being caused by McAfee AV. What you will need to do is go into McAfee and
In your Virus Scan Properties if you go to the On-Access Scan Properties->All processes->Scan Items tab, is On Network drives
checked off? If it is checked off you need to uncheck it. You will need to do this for any of the scan processes you have setup.
I have also confirmed this with McAfee and it is safe to disable this setting as there is potential for it to cause performance issues
and latency problems. By default when you install McAfee this setting is unchecked.
