User gets Outlook error when trying to approve a task

A user who had successfully been approving workflow tasks via Outlook e-mail (Open this task) button now gets this error and is unable to approve via e-mail:

MS Outlook error box:

Outlook cannot complete this action because of an error in the form's code.

The details of the error are:

A button in the form template is missing an xd:CntrlID attribute

Other users are not getting this error, and are successfully using the e-mails generated by the workflow to approve.

p.s.  noticed that in the case of this user, the 'requested by' field is blanked out (this field appears in the form)

Hi Tatiana,

To narrow down the issue scope, I recommend to check the things below:

  1. Use another computer to open the task from Outlook email and check how it works.
  2. Repair Office in your computer and then compare the results.
  3. Open the task from browser and then approve to see if the task can be completed.

Best regards,

Vi

Victoria,

Thank you for your guidance.  Here are the results of your recommendation.  We have more than one person who is experiencing this problem, but the majority of approvers are not encountering any issues and are able to approve via the e-mail/form.

  • "Use another computer to open the task from Outlook email and check how it works."  When the user logs into another computer, this problem does not exist.
  • "Repair Office in your computer and then compare the results." The user has attempted to "repair" Outlook mail, via the option, but this does not fix the problem.  Is there another method of repair?
  • "Open the task from browser and then approve to see if the task can be completed" When the user opens the task via the browser, they are able and successful in approving.

The problem seems to be isolated to some Outlook configurations.  Some users who never had this problem are suddenly encountering this issue.

Any recommendation on how to resolve this will be greatly appreciated!

Hi Tatiana,

How did you repair office?

Please follow the steps below to repair Office and if the issue still exists, please uninstall Office:

Wendy,

We re-installed MS Office, and still encounter the issue.  We already had tried 'repair' per the link you sent.  Clearly there is a difference in the Outlook configuration.   The user logged into another machine and did not encounter the problem when she went through Outlook (e-mail) on that machine.  We are currently comparing configs.

This is strange since only a handful of users have reported this problem.
