User Profile Sync Service Stuck Starting

I am having an issue where the user profile sync service is stuck starting. I have Read harbars guide to fixing this, located here: http://www.harbar.net/articles/sp2010ups2.aspx#ups14

My question is if I recreate the User Profile Service Application do I need to delete the first one first? The reason I ask is because I'm afraid of losing the SharePoint Mysites data. All the permissions are set correctly according to harbar's article and it still isn't working, so I tried recreating the User Profile Service application - to no avail.

Also I read here that http://mmman.itgroove.net/2013/09/16/debugging-steps-in-sharepoint-2013-ups-creation/ this may help, specifically step 8. It says clear the configuration cache, is this likely to resolve the issue of the user profile sync service not starting.

Hi,

You can try clearing the config cache and start the service.

Also are there any errors in ULS logs or event viewer? If yes please provide them for further analyzing the issue.

Please refer following articles as well. Might help you with the issue

Hi,

I have met the same issue with you before.

MySite should be setup before starting the synchronization service.

Restart the SharePoint time service.

Restart the Forefront Identity Manager Synchronization Service.

For your issue, refer to the following article troubleshooting the issue.

Here is the log. I start the powershell script to provision the service at Aug 31 at 11:21 am. I see some powershell references from the script but nothing from the service and if it is provisioning. Do I need to increase the logging level to see this? And if so how do I do that. Am I looking at the correct logs?

I will also try clearing the cache and see if it works then.

LISA: Mysites was not working, but I have now gotten it back up and running again. Still the Sync service will not start. When I look at the windows services FIMService and FIMSyncService are set to disabled. If I re-enable them I can't start the services.

If you have done with all the above, hope you checked the service accounts running those services, just check if there is any difference. Also check did your domain admins changed any privileges for those service accounts.

I tried clearing the sharepoint configuration cache but to no result.

I think I am going to just get rid of each of the User Profiles Services that have been made and create one from scratch, I am going to keep the databases intact and see if this works. Previously I just created a new User Profile Service without deleting the one before.

I will let people know if it works.

After removing the all instances of the user profile service and then recreating, the user profile sync service started up again... Finally!
